IRIS ESTHER NUGENT
(nee PAGE)
August 25, 1924 - December 26, 2021
It is with deep sadness we announce the peaceful passage of Iris Nugent on Sunday, December 26, 2021 in the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 97 years.
Remaining to honour her memory are her daughters, Iris Keating-Pow (Jim Pow) and Cheryl Lovallo, granddaughter Rachelle Keating (Rob McKendry), grandson Chris Lovallo (Maria), great-granddaughter Carly Gesell, sister Audrey Fraser, and many nieces and nephews.
Iris was predeceased by her first husband Robert John Birch and her second husband Albert Nugent, as well as her parents, George and Esther Page, brothers, Victor and Ron Page, her son Douglas Birch and her granddaughter Lisa Lovallo.
Iris was born in Toronto the third child of four. Her parents immigrated from England and raised their family between Halifax and Winnipeg. Iris was quiet and reserved in nature, always curious and an avid reader with a good sense of humour. Even in recent years with the continuous progression of dementia she was known for flashing displays of whit that would have her friends or family laughing at her comments. Iris was an independent woman who strived to always look and act like a "lady" but was capable of demonstrating she could also be strong and feisty when required.
She was known throughout her career and her life as a very hard worker who was always dependable, honest and a fierce fighter for the underdog and for doing the right thing. Most of her working life was for the T. Eaton Company in a number of positions finalizing her career in Human Resources where she retired.
Mom's life presented her with many difficult challenges which she met head on including single parenting three children "her kids" on her own at a young age herself. She met these situations with strength and determination and worked to give us the best life she could. After we left home, Mom wanted to travel and took advantage of any opportunity offered where she was able to go and enjoy trips with family or friends.
Mom always believed that memories were of greater importance than things and she instilled that in her children. Through family holiday traditions and her love of travel she not only created her own memories but planted the seeds of adventure in us.
Our lives will forever be changed by her passing and she will be greatly missed.
According to her wishes, cremation has taken place and no funeral service will be held. A private family gathering will follow at a later date.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff of Riverview Health Centre, especially to the angels on CD-2 and 1 for the loving care and comfort they provided to Iris during the last couple of years of her life. Words cannot express our gratitude for their compassion during these trying times.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the charity of your choice.

On behalf of our family please accept our sincerest condolences. I have a lot of memories. The one that sticks out most was when your mom and my mom and all 6 of us, kids all under the age of 11, stayed for a month at your cottage home in Grand Beach. That was one of the best times of my young life. Your mum was a survivor, and always seemed to have that English stiff upper lip. Or, as they say now, she had grit. We will miss her. - Posted by: Brian Fraser (Nephew) on: Jan 08, 2022
