JEAN I. SMITH
January 25, 1927 - December 25, 2021
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our dear mother, Jean Isabelle Smith in her 95th year. She passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospice in the early morning of Christmas day.
She is survived by her son, Richard Marchello and daughter, Cindy Marchello (Tim).
Mom was predeceased by her husband, Thomas D. Smith and by her parents, Gordon and Lily Stouffer.
Jean grew up in Holmfield, Manitoba with her three sisters, Ella (Dale), Robin (Norman), Joyce (Alex), and three brothers, Les (Irene), Brian (Marlene), Frank (Carol).
Leaving the farm at the age of 18, Jean moved to Winnipeg in 1945 to create a life of her own. As a young woman she found work at Eaton's which was a great place for the fashion conscience Jean.
Jean married and had two children but eventually found true happiness when she met and married Tom Smith while working at Sears. They both eventually moved on to the Government of Manitoba from which they both retired. They spent retirement travelling the world, but they always returned to their favourite summer home in Ponehma Beach. It was here they gardened and entertained family and friends.
Jean was a master seamstress and made many beautiful clothes. Ever the extrovert Jean never passed up an opportunity to go out and meet friends. She was always game for anything and she loved her daily walks around the Parkway.
Mom was the most caring and loving mother and friend, always doing what was best for her children. The bond of love was unbreakable.
She will always be remembered in our hearts as a remarkable woman who was an inspiration to all.
A heartfelt thank you to the wonderful nurses and staff at the Grace Hospice and Riverview.
A private graveside service will be held. A celebration of her life will be planned for this summer.
In lieu of flowers donations can be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society.
