HARTLEY STINSON
Robert Earnest Hartley Stinson, died peacefully at home on January 15, after a long struggle with pulmonary fibrosis. He was 87 years old.
He was predeceased by his mother, Kathleen; his father, Harold; and his brother, Dave. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; his sons, Patrick (Stephanie) and Graham (Alana); his grandchildren, Chloe, Siena, Camille and Oliver; and his sister-in-law, Sybil King.
Hartley was born in Wawanesa, Manitoba in October of 1934. Life was difficult for the family in those depression years, especially after his father was diagnosed with TB and admitted to the Ninette Sanatorium. His father recovered after several years of treatment, but with weakened health. To find work, the family moved to Winnipeg. Hartley was a shy boy at eight years old, and he remembered finding Laura Secord School to be a big, scary place.
After high school at Gordon Bell, Hartley pursued his interest in math by enrolling in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Manitoba. After two years of engineering studies, however, he decided that architecture was better aligned with his career interests, and so he transferred to the Faculty of Architecture. There he met his future wife, Margaret, who was pursuing a degree in Interior Design. He graduated in 1960 with a Bachelor of Architecture and found work at Smith Carter Searle.
Hartley and Margaret married in 1961 and immediately moved to London, England, where they worked and enjoyed all the concerts and plays they could fit into their schedules. After a year, they crammed their little red Austin Mini full of camping gear and set out to explore the continent. They camped from Rome to Copenhagen, and then returned to Winnipeg to find work in architectural offices.
Hartley loved classical music. In his student years, he sang in the choir at Westminster United Church. Later, he became a member of St. Andrew's River Heights United Church, where he sang in the choir and served on several church committees. He reluctantly resigned from the choir when his voice "retired", as he put it, but he continued enjoying the music of the church. He also had a talent for drawing. Each year, he produced a drawing for the family's Christmas card.
Over the years Hartley and Margaret enjoyed many performances of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra, the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra and the Manitoba Theatre Centre, with occasional visits to the opera and ballet. The Winnipeg Art Gallery was a favourite place to visit on Sunday afternoons.
At the time of his retirement, Hartley was the Contract Architect for the Manitoba Government Services Department and represented the architectural profession on the Canadian Construction Documents Committee (CCDC). He was honoured to be made a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC) for his contributions to the profession.
Hartley was a family man above all, and nothing satisfied him more at the end of his life than being a member of a loving family.
The family thanks the WRHA Palliative Care Program for their outstanding service, which made it possible for Hartley to remain at home.
A small, private service will be held at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church.

Dear Margaret and family It is with deep sadness and warm memories that I recently received the news of Hartley's death. When filling out the information I was asked to define my relationship with Hartley. Although I was his minister at St Andrew's I would like to think he thought of me as a friend. I certainly saw him as a friend of mine. Hartley was a intellectual who engaged in the the changing world around him. He was interesting, warm and kind. But most of all in a world where civility has diminished Hartley was a gentlemen. He was a rare breed. And I miss him. My condolences Margaret, to you and your family. My sincere condolences to Margaret and family, on Hartley's passing. He was a fine and committed professional who remained close to the Architectural and Construction Community in his role at Manitoba Government Services, the RAIC, and other committee involvements. He had a ready laugh, a positive attitude and displayed his knowledge and integrity daily, at work, and at 'play'. John C. Dear Margaret and family: so sorry to hear of Hartley's passing. He was my mentor at government services and the lessons he taught me in construction contract law proved invaluable. His quiet demeanour and articulate writings on difficult situations were an invaluable asset for the province. He was highly regarded by his colleagues and I cherish the years that I worked with and for him. - Posted by: Mel Shewchuk (Co worker) on: Jan 28, 2022

Dear Margaret, I was so sorry to hear the news of your Hartley’s passing. I remember him as being such a kind spirit on those occasions when our paths crossed. I still smile at your description of the commitment the two of you made to learn French and it did inspire me to struggle on with a similar French commitment. Know that there are others who have also walked this path and found our way. Take care Margaret. - Posted by: Brian Everton (Friend) on: Jan 25, 2022

Dear Margaret and family, we were so sorry to read of Hartley’s passing, our wonderful neighbor on Waterloo for many years. Hartley was a true gentleman, filled with knowledge that he generously shared with us. We fondly remember him regularly strolling down the sidewalk to attend choir practice or church services. We were also the grateful recipients of the beautiful Christmas cards, which demonstrated another one of his gifts. May his life be a blessing to each of you. - Posted by: Bruce Meisner and Henry Price (Friend ) on: Jan 23, 2022

I remember him so well Margaret. Walking in the door at GBR to see you. Always nattily dressed with bow tie. I enjoyed seeing you both 3 years ago at the GBR luncheon at the Jewish Place. I never knew he was born and raised in Wawanesa. My sister retired there. My deepest sympathy Margaret to you and your sons and their families.
