HELMUT GUENTHER

With heavy hearts we announce the passing of Helmut Guenther, beloved husband, dad, Opa and brother. He died suddenly but very peacefully in Winnipeg on January 24, 2022 at the age of 85.
Helmut was predeceased by his parents, Abram and Helena Guenther, his son Arthur Guenther, as well as his sister Helene (Ernst) Epp, and brother Herman (Maria) Guenther all of Germany. He will be lovingly remembered by his beloved wife of 63 years, Katharina (Tina), and his four children: Herb Guenther (Jo-Anne), Eleanore (Bernie) Kraynyk, Marlene Guenther Brown all of Winnipeg, and Edward (Tami) Guenther of Calgary, along with his five grandchildren: Jerrad (Judit) Guenther, Brysen Guenther, Brett Kraynyk, Kourtney Kraynyk, Kohl Guenther, and great-grandson Arlo Guenther. He is survived by his younger brother Wally (Olga) Guenther in Germany, along with many nieces and nephews.
Helmut was born in Rosenthal, Ukraine on March 8, 1936. At the young age of four, he lost both of his parents, and began a journey to establish a new life, making his way to Germany, and eventually as a refugee to Paraguay where he met the love of his life, Tina. Helmut immigrated to Canada in 1957 and Tina followed, and a year later they got married on August 16, 1958. He was a very skilled carpenter and spent many years installing cabinets.
Helmut took a lot of pride in his family and was such a loving, kind, and caring person. Family meant everything to him and it was evident by the bond he had with his children and grandchildren. Everyone loved Opa!
Helmut had a strong faith in God. He was a well-loved member of the Springfield Heights Mennonite Church family for over 58 years.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, February 4, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. at Springfield Heights Mennonite Church by invitation only. All those attending must be double vaccinated and masked.
For those unable to attend, a link will be available on the Springfield Heights Church YouTube channel at Helmut Guenther – Funeral Service 2022 https://youtu.be/vaqEJRsTjJU
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Helmut's memory to Mennonite Central Committee or the Heart & Stroke Foundation.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Helmut and Tina raised a beauty family and I (Hans) would often babysit their kids in the early years. Whenever we visited Helmut and Tina, we were always greeted with hugs. We fondly remember Helmet treating his entire family to a week long stays at Clear Lake during summers. Because we also shared a love of Clear Lake get-a-ways, we would be privy to the boisterous laughter and chatter while they enjoyed their family’s company during these gatherings. Our deepest condolences on the sudden passing of their husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He will be sadly missed but lovingly remembered.
