ALEXANDER DAVID BARBER
July 22, 1935 - February 1, 2022

Peacefully on February 1, 2022, at the age of 86.
Predeceased by wife Eileen, sisters, Gladys and Kay, and brother Bill. Survived by sons, Darrell (Carol; Caitlin and Brittaney), Brian (Wendy; Brendan and Rebecca) and Darwin (Jodie; Rylan and McAley), second wife Kim, sisters, Win, Flo and Eileen, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Dad was born on July 22, 1935, in Whitewood, Saskatchewan and was raised on the nearby family farm. He worked as a welder's assistant on the construction of the TransCanada pipeline in various locations in southern Saskatchewan and northwestern Ontario, before joining Saskatchewan Wheat Pool in 1958. During a career of nearly 40 years, he worked as a grain elevator agent, an area superintendent, and finally as the manager of Saskatchewan Wheat Pool's grain grading division in Winnipeg.
Dad married Eileen Packham on August 8, 1959. Together they raised a young family during periodic relocations, culminating in a transfer to Winnipeg in 1971. He was an avid vegetable gardener and a big Winnipeg Jets fan, having season tickets for the duration of the Jets 1.0 era. Sadly, he lost Eileen in 1987 following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Dad was a devoted grandfather and was always in attendance for dance recitals, hockey games and school functions. He could always be counted on to care for a sick grandchild kept home from daycare or school. He was always involved in community activities, volunteering his time with the local church and other organizations.
Dad married Kim Kaake on July 31, 1993, and together they enjoyed many years together, including time spent at their cottage on Lake Winnipeg. He revelled in the many jobs required in maintaining both a house and a cottage, and passed on an abundance of knowledge and skills to his grandchildren.
As his health declined in his later years, a move into a personal care home was necessary. The family would like to thank the staff at the Golden Door Geriatric Centre for their compassionate care and kindness to our father during his time there.
A private family service will take place at 10:00 a.m. on Wednesday, February 9, 2022. It will be livestreamed for anyone wishing to attend virtually. Details are available through the Chapel Lawn website.

  • I was deeply saddened to hear of Alex's passing. I have many fond memories with Alex and Kim on Guildford Street. For years this was my home away from home after a long drive from Thompson. • My deepest condolences Barber Family. My name is John Enright My family and I lived at 347 Duffield street from 1987 to 1996. I was just a young kid when I first met Mr Barber. I was his companion for many a Jets game and helped out around the garden in the back yard. My mother Marla started working for Sask Pool after Alex got her the job. She recently retired in November. That job changed our lives in the Enright household. I have to say the lessons I learned from Alex have followed me through out my life despite the short amount of time we spent together. Thank you Mr Barber enjoy your rest. - Posted by: John Enright (Neighbour ) on: Feb 05, 2022
