ALAN JOHN SEMCHUK
September 26, 1959 - February 13, 2022

It is with deep sadness the family announces the passing of our dearest husband and father, Alan (more affectionately known as Al), at St. Boniface Hospital with his family by his side.
Al was born in Winnipeg to Emil and Martha Semchuk (nee Nowosad). His older sisters, Donna and Debbie were delighted to have a younger brother. His younger sister Rosalind was a welcome addition and she adored her older brother as much as he adored her.
At the age of 11, Al decided on a career in law after watching an episode of Perry Mason. He graduated from the Robson Hall Faculty of Law at the University of Manitoba in 1984 and upon completing articles with Skwark, Myers, Kussin & Weinstein he began his legal career with Johnston & Company in Dauphin, Manitoba. In 2008, he left private practice and joined Manitoba Justice as a Crown Attorney. Al was passionate about justice and felt everyone was entitled to representation. His proudest moments in his career included two cases presented at the Supreme Court of Canada.
Al was a Life Bencher with the Law Society of Manitoba. In addition to his legal interests, Al was actively involved in his community. He was a director on the board for Canada's National Ukrainian Festival in Dauphin for many years. He also volunteered with Dauphin Minor Hockey, coached minor baseball and was a member of the Dauphin Golf and Country Club.
Al loved golf, the Chicago Blackhawks, and the Montreal Expos. He loved fishing and some of his fondest childhood memories were with his Gido and great-uncles at Blue Lakes. He enjoyed a wide variety of music and loved movies, especially the classics. Al liked to travel and when on vacation, his souvenirs were often works of art from the local area.
His biggest pride and joy was his family. He loved with his whole heart and was so proud of their accomplishments, large or small. He was especially proud to officiate his daughter's marriage in 2018.
Al is survived by his wife Nancy (nee Still) of 35 years; three children, Claire (Adam), Lisa (Peter), Adam (Caleigh); sisters, Donna, Deborah (William), Rosalind; aunt Lena (Ed); cousins, nieces and nephews on both sides of the family.
He is predeceased by his parents, Emil and Martha; grandparents, John and Nellie (nee Krisko) Nowosad; in-laws, Jasper and Patricia (Mearns) Still; as well as numerous extended family members and friends.
Cremation has taken place in accordance with Al's wishes. A live webcast of the funeral service will be available for viewing on February 26, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. Friends & family may join in by following this link

Condolences & Memories (11 entries)

  • I was shocked to hear of Al’s passing. My deepest condolences to Nancy and family. Al and I were classmates together through Law school. We teamed as moot court partners and later articled together at Skwark, Myers. He was a good friend, full of life and did a great impersonation of Bob Dylan. I cherish those memories. Above all, Al was a quality person, who respected and loved the law. Times, work, and travels have separated us; from Australia I pass on this accolade, “Al was a good mate”. - Posted by: Lee Stuesser (Law School Friend) on: Mar 09, 2022

  • I am so sorry to hear of Alan's passing. My condolences to Nancy and family. - Posted by: Marcie Layton (2nd cousin) on: Feb 27, 2022

  • What a shock. I am so sad that Alan has left us at his early age. I still remember back in 1975 how surprised I was with his English compositions, especially with his character descriptions of Pip and Estella in Charles Dickens, Great Expectations. I really did not maintain contact after the 1980's, but I will try to follow the services tomorrow. I'm in Rome, Italy. Alan was a great grade 10 student! and I am sure became a great teacher as well in his practice of law. My sincere condolences to Nancy and to the children and the entire family, Michael Kolarcik, SJ - Posted by: Michael Kolarcik (Grade 10 Teacher, English Literature and Grammar - St. Paul's Highschool) on: Feb 25, 2022

  • Nancy, Claire, Lisa and Adam, We have been sitting heavy with the news. Al was a solid guy. He did a lot of good. I’m sure the last days were tough. But today I have been remembering him on a fine summer day, wearing a Blackhawks jersey, teeing off lefty, and yelling out "YO" as he did. (He shanked it. But he did it again on the next tee - and creamed it.) Any ways, that will always make me smile. Here’s Sue. Nancy, We were very sad to hear Al passed. Our family remembers how you and Al welcomed us to Dauphin and made us feel at home. Wishing you all loving memories to hold in your heart. Sue, Jim, Megan & Emma. - Posted by: Jim ROSS (Friend) on: Feb 23, 2022

  • So very sad to hear that Alan has passed away. A half a century ago we were kids growing up next door to one another on Valour Road. We were great friends in those days, part of a huge tribe of little boomers that roamed ‘free-range’ between the neighbourhood houses, the adjacent fields, the willows and what is now Westview Park. I lost touch with Alan after the family moved to Brunkild, however always imagined that someday somehow we would bump into each other, get caught up and recall our youthful adventures. I remember a good natured, funny and considerate kid and have no doubt those qualities framed Alan’s adult life. My sincere condolences to Alan's family. - Posted by: THOR BORGFORD (Childhood friend) on: Feb 23, 2022

  • Nancy and family our heartfelt condolences go out to you guys. I had the extreme pleasure of working with Al for close to 20 years. Al's professionalism and dedication to his profession was second to none. I always enjoyed speaking with Al on the subject of work or just generally any sports teams. Al will be greatly missed by all that had the pleasure to work with him. - Posted by: Todd Boguski and family (Co-worker and friend ) on: Feb 22, 2022

  • The Semchuk family lived two doors down from us on Valour Road. I remember Alan and his sisters Debbie and Donna as kids. Father Emil built an extension to the house at the back. I always thought it was very cool to have this extra space. The family moved some time in the 1960s and we lost touch with these good friends and neighbours. • Saddened to hear of Alan's passing, my Condolences to the family - Posted by: Tony Militano (High School Classmate ) on: Feb 22, 2022

  • Very sorry to hear of Allan's passing, and want to convey my condolences to his family members and friends in Dauphin. I first got to know Allan in Winnipeg when he was working in the private bar and I was a Crown Attorney, and after he joined our office in Dauphin, we of course remained friends, albeit at considerable distance. Allan was a genuinely "nice" person (in the best sense of the word) - always ready with a friendly greeting and a sincere interest in finding out how you were doing. A true gentleman. He will be missed. - Posted by: John Peden (Former colleague) on: Feb 21, 2022

  • Very saddened to hear of Al's passing. I had dealing with Al when he was in the private bar and I was a prosecutor. I had the greatest of respect for Al and although I have not seen him for many years I always hoped we would meet up again. My condolences to Al's family. He will be missed by all. • I told a legal friend the sad news of Al's passing, and he said he didn't know him well, but knew he was a really good lawyer. He was much more than that, he was really good colleague, sounding board, counsel, husband, father, fellow Hawks fan, and above all a good man. - Posted by: Ronald Toews (friend) on: Feb 19, 2022
