Dear Tina, my condolences to you and your family on Jake's passing. It's been a privilege to get to know you and Jake while volunteering at the MCC Sargent Thrift Store. I enjoyed Jake's keen sense of humor, too. - Posted by: Myra Friesen (Friend) on: Feb 25, 2022

Jake and I both taught at Red River College.....he in the Trades area and I in Civil Tech. In the spring of 1990, a meeting was arranged with him and an instructor in the Business dept, Dorothy Derksen. We shared our concern about the spiritual well-being of the college. Dorothy suggested considering chaplaincy, which took some subsequent country-wide searching by snail mail to ascertain whether this was a viable option. It turned out that it was, so a committee of five was formed in the fall of 1991. Jake volunteered to be the Treasurer, a position he had for the next 25 years. The Chaplaincy ministry was approved by the college, and the startup was in 1995. Jake was actively involved in the chaplaincy ministry. In addition to looking after the "books", he assisted with writing the bylaws; applying for and maintaining corporation status; generating income for the ministry; encouraging the volunteer chaplains in a variety of ways. Jake was committed at a personal level in terms of his faith and was committed to the chaplaincy ministry on the campus. He was someone that was true to his word, a quality that was highly appreciated. Jake was impacted, as all of us were, when the College terminated the chaplaincy ministry in 2014. He participated in a brain-storming session, where it was decided to retain the corporation and plan toward a restart on a different basis. Jake was experiencing increasing hearing loss, so in 2016, he decided to resign from the chaplaincy board. I have a lot of good memories of Jake, all related to the various issues that arise in the course of a ministry. I would readily turn to him for his perspective. He had a broad range of experience, with a mix of humour, that proved invaluable on a number of occasions. Personally it has been an enriching experience knowing Jake as a colleague on the campus; as a fellow servant for our Lord; and as a friend. - Posted by: Al Heinrichs (Friend) on: Feb 20, 2022

Oh, I am so sad to hear about Jake’s death, Tina! My arms want to lovingly surround you! 💞 I loved chatting one on one with Jake every Monday at the shop! What a kind and gentle person! Thompson was a very young community so when I moved here you and Jake were one of the first older couples I was privileged to get to know! 😊 - Posted by: Karen Buller (Friend through Sargent MCC Thrift Shop) on: Feb 19, 2022
