GARRY DOUGLAS MCCORRIE
February 16, 1943 - January 29, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Doug, after a lengthy illness, on January 29, 2022, at the age of 78 in Kelowna, BC.
Doug is survived by his sisters, Marilyn (Alex) Wusaty, Patsy Hadden, Joan (Norm) Woodward, Donna McPherson and brother Bruce (Laurie), sister-in-law Lou McCorrie, brother-in-law Ernie Ducharme, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Tommy and Mabel McCorrie, brother Robert, and sisters, Elizabeth and Nancy.
Doug was born and raised in Transcona and made many, many lifelong friends, in particular, Bill Calder and Ron Nowicki.
Doug was an avid reader and he excelled academically throughout his school years. He enjoyed playing sports, especially hockey, at the rink, "North-End Transcona back in the day", and later, as an adult, he became a hockey coach for Transcona's youth.
Doug worked in the offices at C.N.R. in Transcona and at Symington Yards; several years later he accepted a transfer with Via Rail and moved to BC. The climate of BC better suited Doug's interests and hobbies; he was consistent with his fitness routines of daily walking and cycling, even relinquishing ownership of his car, having no use for it! Doug had a thirst for knowledge, travelling extensively throughout Europe and the U.S.A. One such trip to Scotland and through Doug's and his sisters' genealogy research, he was able to connect with our dad's family, the "McCorrie Clan" in Armadale, Scotland.
In keeping with Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place and no formal service will be held. Because Doug was a lifelong learner himself, and to support today's youth in their academic pursuits, he created the G.D.McCorrie scholarship at the Okanagan University College (O.U.C.).
The family would like to thank the staff of "The Village at Smith Creek, Baptist Housing" in Kelowna for their care and compassion to Doug over the past two years. Also, heartfelt thanks to special friend, Tracy MacLean, for all her care and support to Doug throughout his years in Kelowna.

Rest in peace, dear brother; you are dearly loved and re-united with many family members in Heaven.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • Uncle Doug’s apartment was as far as I was allowed to walk in younger years in Transcona. When we moved to Thunder Bay he came to visit. We went skiing together and he taught me a lot. I enjoyed my time with him. He was a nice and funny guy. I am glad he is not suffering anymore. Rest in peace Uncle Doug. - Posted by: Traci Calder (Bill Calder’s daughter) on: Mar 04, 2022
