VALETTA MELVINA HOGAN
November 12, 1929 - February 26, 2022
In loving memory, we announce the passing of our dear Mom and Grandma, who passed away at Lions Prairie Manor on February 26, 2022. Valetta was born on November 12, 1929, in Vista, Manitoba.
She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Barbara Bancken (husband Robert), granddaughter Ashley Tully (husband Brett), great-grandsons, Daniel, Greyson and Brody, grandson Cole McKay, son Calvin Hogan and son David Bates (Mary-Ellen) of BC, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
Mom enjoyed telling stories about growing up with 12 siblings on the farm, attending Islay School in Vista and then Rossburn School for grade 11. She then moved to Winnipeg where she took a six-week summer course for Permit Teachers. She taught eight grades in a few different one room schoolhouses. She moved into Winnipeg to get a summer job and worked for Trans Canada Airlines for a few years before going on an adventure to Vancouver. Here she worked for CP Air and joined the Navel reserves, then moved to Montreal where she again worked for TCA before she married and had Barb. Her husband was transferred back to Winnipeg where she had Calvin and David. She had many tough years, but always worked hard and was a wonderful single mother.
Val was a strong independent woman who loved her family and enjoyed the simple pleasures in life. She worked at the Manitoba Telephone System before quitting to care for her parents for two years. After taking a Secretarial Course at Red River, she got a position at Winnipeg Adult Education Center where she stayed 22 years before retiring.
Both during and after her career at the Winnipeg School Division, she spent a lot of time volunteering, receiving many certificates throughout her years of service. She received her life membership at the St. James Legion Ladies Auxiliary after 34 years of helping veterans and the community, she was active in McClure Church belonging to the UCW, she spent ten years volunteering for CNIB and 25 years for Lions Manor in Winnipeg. She served as Secretary and President on the McClure Place tenants association and was especially proud when the board presented her with a thank you gift for her hard work at McClure Place.
Val enjoyed lawn bowling and five pin bowling into her later years, one year representing Manitoba at the Senior Games. Some of her favourite memories were the few trips she was able to take.
Barb would like to thank the staff at Lions Prairie Manor in Portage for the care and compassion they showed Val and her family during the last year.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer's Society of Manitoba.
A Celebration of Life will take place at McClure United Church on Saturday March 26 at 1:00 p.m.

We are so sorry for your loss. We always enjoyed spending time with your Mom at Jack and Velma’s in Sandy Hook. She was very generous and always had some little gift for our boys when they were little. I’m sure she will be missed. I had the honour and privilege of working with Val when she volunteered at Lions Manor. Val was a huge help to our Recreation department. She had a great sense of humour and was a very hard worker. I know she will be missed by all. - Posted by: Tara Hart (Friend) on: Mar 05, 2022
