JAMES EDWARD (TED) HINCHLIFFE
After spending the day surrounded by his family and with his wife, Margaret, by his side, James Edward (Ted) Hinchliffe of Winnipeg, passed away peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of March 14, 2022. We are saddened to announce his passing but are comforted in knowing that Ted led a life full of meaning and purpose.
His wife Margaret (Adamson), whom he wed 60 years ago on June 23, 1962, was the love of his life. An equal partner in all things, she was his most trusted advisor and confidante. Together they were an unstoppable team and were happiest in each other's company.
Ted deeply loved his three strong, independent daughters; Heather Ragot (Gerald), Aynsley Cockshott (Grant) and Christine Adamson (Patrick) as well as his seven wonderful grandchildren; Owen Cockshott, Catherine Adamson, Benjamin Cockshott, Vivian Adamson, Eric Ragot, Elliot Ragot and little Margaret (Maggie) Ragot.
Ted also leaves to mourn his passing, his brother Douglas (Angela deceased), his chosen sister Linn Barabash (Lloyd) and his sister-in-law Karen Lee (David deceased), as well as many nieces and nephews.
Ted was born to Eric and Florence (Taylor) Hinchliffe on January 28, 1939, in Swan River, Manitoba. He was an active and somewhat mischievous child who preferred being outside to the classroom. Ted found success early at work. He was clever, ambitious, and eager to make his mark.
After marrying Margaret, he saw the chance to satisfy his innate entrepreneurial spirit in the North. In 1968 with Margaret and their growing family, he moved to Thompson, Manitoba to build the Mystery Lake Motor Hotel. This proved to be one of the most important decisions of his life. With little experience, but great intuition, Ted and Margaret created a flourishing business. It was a boom time in Thompson and there was not a detail of the operation that was not given Ted's undivided attention. Under Ted's direction, the Mystery Lake Motor Hotel became the place to stay, the Adventurers' North Dining Room, the place to eat and the Trappers' Tavern, the place to have fun. Ted was proud of the standards that he set and the hospitality that was offered to his guests. People continue to speak fondly of their memories of the hotel and the relationships forged by Ted in those years.
Ted and Margaret loved to create beautiful spaces. Their immaculate home in Winnipeg and their beloved cottages in Wasagaming, Clear Lake were filled with art, antiques and unique collections of porcelain, sculpture, and artifacts. Ted loved trees and planted and cared for them with great dedication. Ted's attention to detail and his desire to leave things better than he found them were guiding principles throughout his life.
Ted loved to entertain, and he and Margaret did so often and with great style. From the perfectly grilled steak to the very driest martini, there was only one way to do things and it was the right way, always. There was a wonderful formality to times spent with Ted and Margaret. Sunday dinners were eaten in the dining room using the good china and crystal. But although the setting was formal, there was always laughter and lively conversation.
In retirement years, Ted and Margaret enjoyed trips across Canada, the US and Europe. Hawaii was a particular favourite for Ted and he and Margaret spent many happy times there.
To his friends and family, Ted was admired and will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and hospitality. To his grandchildren, he will be remembered as their beloved Poppa who was so very proud of them.
Ted lived life on his own terms. He had strong views and spoke his mind. He lived with integrity. Ted carried his own water and knew the value of each drop!
The family would like to thank the caring hands of those who watched over Ted during his time of need, namely Dr Pravinsigar Mehta, Edith Mendoza, Ria Santos, Maria Ledda, Concordia Lamsen, Erin Mattson at Palliative Care and the wonderful palliative care nurses, Lisa, and Donna.
Flowers are gratefully declined, however, if you wish, we encourage you to donate to The Winnipeg Foundation, in his honour. At Ted's request, cremation has taken place with a private family gathering to be held at a later date.

Hi Margaret and family. I am saddened to hear of Ted’s passing and am sending my condolences. He was a great man and was one of my favourite customers through the years. I always enjoyed his stories when I had the opportunity to sit down with you guys on the deck and I appreciated the cold drinks you would always offer me on those hot summer days. I am glad your summer together at the lake last year was such a beautiful one. May you find comfort in celebrating Ted’s life with your daughters and grandchildren. Very saddened to hear of Ted’s passing . Our sincere condolences to Margaret and family. I had the pleasure of working for the Hinchcliffe’s at the Mystery Lake dining room for 17 years. A powerful couple for sure yet so very humble. It wasn’t hard to respect and work for them. They even visited me at the restaurant I work at now. We had the opportunity to enjoy his hospitality at their cabin at Clearwater Lake along with Garry’s father Hector. I hope Ted and Hector are enjoying a drink together and catching up. Sincerely, Candace Miller and Garry Despins. - Posted by: Candace Miller and Garry Despins (Friends ) on: Mar 21, 2022

I was saddened to hear of Ted's passing. I worked at the Mystery Lake Hotel as the bookkeeper for many years. Mr. Hinchliffe was generous and considerate to everyone and always had a smile on his face. He had a strong work ethic and led by example. He and Margaret always worked together as a team, pitching in wherever needed. He is part of Thompson history and his passing is a great loss. - Posted by: Helen Martinussen (former employee) on: Mar 20, 2022

My mother, Doreen, worked for Ted at The Mystery Lake Hotel at the front desk during the night shift. He was a very kind man, when he was not using the living quarters off the front desk area he would let my mom bring my sister, brother and myself to work with her. She would use the living quarters to put us to bed and still be able to watch over us. My deepest sympathies to his family. - Posted by: Cindy Loftus (Bach) (None) on: Mar 19, 2022

Condolences to Margret and family. Ted was a great man I did work for him in Thompson. When he built something it was sure to withstand the test of time. He had the most structurally sound flag pole base in front of the Mystery Lake. I was a pilot with the Province Waterbombers and we would stay at Mystery. My room door would open once in a while and a case of beer would show up delivered by Ted. When there were no rooms were available, he offered his house for us to stay in. After I retired, I was active in the ANAVETs 283 club and one day Ted came walking in and spied me sitting there and made sure I had a beer. I guess he had a meeting of something with people. He was a great guy. - Posted by: Gordon Watt (Hospitality) on: Mar 19, 2022

Very sad to see the notice of Ted’s passing. He was a longtime customer at my business The Preferred Perch. As a small, independent business he would always check in on every visit to see how my business was doing and always offering his best wishes as he understood the challenges in business. He had a word of support every single time he came and I loved that. I always looked forward to see his big SUV pull up and got ready to load up his birdseed and have our little chat. He is one customer I will always remember. My condolences to his family. Rest in paradise Ted. - Posted by: Sherrie Versluis (Business) on: Mar 19, 2022
