GARRY HILDEBRAND
January 16, 1950 April 1, 2022
It is with great sadness our family announces that Garry died on April 1, 2022 at the age of 72 years.
Garry will be remembered with love by his wife of 49 years, Carol (nee Sheppard); their daughter Karin, son-in-law Paul Smith and their children, Ethan and Scarlett, of Melbourne, Australia; and their daughter Krista, son-in-law Ian Siemens and their daughter, Lucy, of Winnipeg. Garry was so proud of his daughters and sons-in-law, but his greatest happiness of his retirement years was when his grandchildren became part of his life.
Garry will be sadly missed by his brothers, Raymond (Gail), Dennis (Lorna), Sam, and Darryll (Kelly) and their families, as well as by his sister-in-law Donna Sheppard (Brian Dewan). He is also survived by extended family, friends, and former co-workers in Winnipeg and across Canada, as well as the U.S., U.K., and Australia. Garry was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Helen Hildebrand.
Born in southern Manitoba, Garry lived in Winnipeg for most of his life. He was very active in supporting his daughters in their extra-curricular activities in their schools and the St. Vital community. He enjoyed cycling, the Reh-Fit Centre, cooking (accompanied by a glass of red wine), and cheering on his favourite team, "Manchester United".
Garry and Carol were fortunate to experience travel to many places around the world, enjoying the culture, scenery, and food along the way. On returning home, he was already planning their next adventure abroad.
For most of his working life, Garry was part of the Workplace Safety and Health division of the Province of Manitoba, retiring as senior management in 2005.
Cremation has taken place, and at Garry's request, no funeral will be held. A small family gathering will take place at a later date.
Our family wishes to thank Garry's family physician, Dr. L. Cummings (and staff), for many years of dedicated care. We also want to acknowledge Dr. L. Homik and Debbie Homik for their medical expertise, assistance, and support. To our families and dear friends - thank you for your phone calls, visits, meals, and flowers. Our thanks also go to Paul at Careica Health (oxygen) and the Palliative Home Care program that allowed Garry to remain at home for the duration of his illness.
If desired, donations in Garry's memory can be made to the Canadian Pulmonary Fibrosis Association or to CancerCare Manitoba.

Dan and I were saddened to hear of Gary's passing. I met both Carol and Gary when I travelled from Australia to visit my Canadian family. Carol and I were studying Obstetrics at the Misericordia Hospital many years ago. Carol and Gary made a lonely Aussie girl feels welcome. We have kept in touch over the years and it was with great pleasure that we met them both again on their travels to Australia. Dan and I offer our sincere condolences to Carol and Family on the passing of Gary. - Posted by: Jill Edmonds (Friend) on: May 21, 2022

Carol and family. I was shocked and saddened to read of Garry's death. I worked at MGEU and Garry, I and others from govt. departments often worked together to resolve Health & Safety matters affecting govt. employees. He was always ready to listen and came up with suggested solutions even though we didn't always see eye to eye. I respected him and his position and know he was committed to serving Manitobans. I did often hear about his travels, the upcoming plans for trips, and of course progress reports on his girls. Being retired and not part of the workforce one often wonders about people they have worked alongside.I was saddened to hear his life ended much too early and I'm sure his death will leave a huge void in your lives. My sincere condolences. - Posted by: Margaret Day (Friend ) on: Apr 19, 2022

He loved and spoke of his family often and his travels to see the grandkids. He will be missed. - Posted by: Kim REid (Staff Rehfit) on: Apr 13, 2022

I was also surprised and saddened to hear of Garry's passing. I first met Garry when I was hired as a safety and health officer at Workplace Safety and Health. We initially had or desks side by side sharing one telephone. (Those were the days!) As our manager, you always knew where you stood with Garry. He was fair and very supportive as well as encouraging. I count it a privilege to have known. - Posted by: David Hidlebaugh (Co-worker) on: Apr 09, 2022

Carol, I am so sorry for the loss of your husband. It's been many years since we've seen each other but after working together, it seems you always remain a part of each other's history. I remember hearing a lot about Garry and your girls. I hope you find comfort in the happy memories of your time together. Sounds like you had a wonderful life of travel and family. Thinking of you and your family at this sad time. - Posted by: Sharon Lefley (Former co-worker ) on: Apr 09, 2022

I'm shocked and saddened to hear to Garry's passing. We spent many times together over the years through our work and over many lunches and the occasional glass of wine. I was fond of his dry wit and sense of humor. My deepest condolences to Carol and family. Garry will be missed by all who knew him. - Posted by: Stan Kruse (Friend) on: Apr 09, 2022
