H. ARTHUR (ART) JONASSON
Born - May 25, 1926
Date of Passing - April 23, 2022
Art passed away peacefully at Lions Personal Care Home on Saturday at the age of 95 years.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife Florette, children, David (Jean), Jerrold (Catherine) and Joan Gillis (Richard). He was predeceased by another son Kenneth (Marla) in 2014. He leaves behind nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Art was the only child of Bertha and Egill Jonasson. He was born in the West End of Winnipeg and lived there all of his life. His first language was Icelandic, and he was very proud of his heritage. He joined the Canadian Army in 1944 between high school and university but did not go overseas. In 1950 he married Florette Giasson.
In his early career he worked many jobs, selling insurance and real estate, driving taxi and as an insurance underwriter, inspector and later adjustor. He spent 32 years with the Fire Commissioners Office, retiring in 1991.
He was a member of many organizations including the St. John's Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Khartum Shrine Temple and Shrine Oriental Band (all 50 years membership), Manitoba Government Employees Association (Honorary Life Member) and the Rotary Club of Winnipeg (30 years perfect attendance). He was a long-time member of First Lutheran Church and later the Church of God. He was very dedicated to the organizations he belonged to. He enjoyed a good argument and was always true to his convictions.
Dad always made time to help other people. He especially loved spending time with his children and grandchildren. As we grieve his passing, we remember all of the good times we shared with him.
A Celebration of Life will be held at a later time.
We thank the staff at Lions Personal Care Home who took great care of him for his last two years.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to the Winnipeg Rotary Club Community Service Fund.

Art was a constant at any meeting, in Rotary or around town. Interested and involved, convivial. My short-wave radio reminds me of Art who liked anything technical. If Art's Celebration on 17 AUG is virtual and recorded, it would be fun & a travelogue of activities worth enjoying. Families, club associates & friends are lucky to have had Art in their lives. - Posted by: Denzil FEINBERG (Member of Winnipeg Rotary Club & Carleton Breakfast Club ) on: Aug 12, 2022
