JAMES DOUGLAS (DOUG) NICHOL
October 8, 1961 - May 4, 2022

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Douglas (Doug) Nichol, beloved father, grandfather, brother and friend, at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg.
Left to mourn his passing are daughter Boudicca (Zak); grandchildren, Harlon and Tomyris-Juniper; sisters, Judy (Jim), Kelly (Gabe), and Ardis (Kevin); nephews, James (Jen) and Mark (Courtney); nieces, Jillian (Brent) and Lauren (Kam); great-nephew Jake; great-niece Jessie; cousins and many friends. Doug also leaves behind his much loved dog Buster. Doug was predeceased by his parents, Jim and Chris.
Doug was an avid reader from an early age. He read widely and was particularly fond of fantasy and science fiction. He was one of the original Trekkies, watching the TV show Star Trek from episode one. Some of his favourite times were spent with friends at Keycon, which he attended as a Klingon warrior.
He liked to write and spin a good yarn. He listened to the blues and jazz and was very fond of opera. He also enjoyed cooking and eating good food. He had a penchant for spearmint leaves and wine gums, black coffee, and the occasional dram of good scotch.
Doug loved animals and he often took in strays. He adopted his dog Buster, when no one else would, and remained steadfast in his commitment to him.
Doug had a loyal and generous spirit and he gave freely of himself and his time to his family and friends. He was always willing to lend a hand or an ear. He had a quick sense of humour and chose to see the good in people wherever possible. One of his greatest joys was spending time with his family, especially his daughter and grandchildren.
He never complained as he experienced increasingly dire health challenges over the last few years of his life. During his last weeks, which were spent in the hospital, he faced his death with grace, humility and awe-inspiring courage. He will live forever in the hearts and memories of those who knew and loved him.
The family would like to convey a special thank you to Sherry Wiebe and her mother Joan for their friendship and generous support during the last year of his life. Their kindness to Doug and Buster meant more to him than words can express.
The family would also like to thank the staff on GA4 and the MICU at the Health Sciences Centre for the commitment, care and compassion extended to Doug and our family in his last weeks.
In keeping with Doug's wishes, cremation has taken place and his ashes will be interred at Thomson "In the Park", near his parents.
Please join the family in celebrating Doug's life at a come and go reception at Thomson "In the Park", 1291 McGillivray Blvd, Winnipeg, on Sunday, May 29, 2022 between 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 pm.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • Doug was a close and dear friend for over 25 years. We shared so many great times, whether playing games (which he was awesome at), changing brake pads on my Mustang, working on renovations or just sitting and talking for hours, I simply can’t imagine a better friend. Doug, was caring and creative, humorous and supportive and always had your back. We all have to go sometime, and Doug handled his passing with courage and grace. • I met Doug in 1996 at the Portage Place Cinema's at the premier of Star Trek: First Contact. There he was, dressed in Klingon forehead and armor with its distinctive black and white tiger striped pants and sleeves. Of course I was immediately smitten. I slowly got to know Doug, viewing him first as a mentor, then a friend then as a brother. We shared triumphs and tragedies over the years. He was my stalwart companion, a brick wall I could lean against whenever life got to be too much. I was honored to have him stand beside me as my best man as I married the love of my life. He was named godfather to our son Hunter by my wife Jenn and I. I could go on for hours about his wit, his kindness, his love of life. We last talked on Saturday, April 30, 2022. At that time he assured me that the rumors of his imminent demise were greatly exaggerated. How I wish that were true. As we said good-bye I knew I had to say what I felt. "I love you" "Aw, hey. I love you too" I'll miss you forever brother. Qapla! - Posted by: Corey Toews (Friend) on: May 31, 2022

  • I have many fond memories of uncle Jim, aunty Chris, Judy, Kelly, Doug and ardith surprising us in moose jaw with a visit! We had such fun sleeping in a camper and singing Beans beans the magical fruit the more you eat......well you know the rest! Doug and I always hung out together as we were the same age. I knew way back then that he was a gentle soul. Although much time has passed and it's been a long time since connecting, I hold many fond memories of Doug and the entire Nicholas family!! You are all in my thoughts and heart at this very sad and difficult time!! XOXO ❤️ - Posted by: Colleen Sax (Cousin ) on: May 23, 2022

  • So very sorry for your loss. Doug will live on in everyone's fond memories of him. Hugs to you all. - Posted by: Kathy Frey (Cousin) on: May 22, 2022

  • Over the years our lives drifted apart, and that will forever be a true regret for me. Doug was one of kindest, most thoughtful individuals I have ever met. The Nichol house became a bit of a haven for me, something I will never forget, and still look back on with love as we say goodbye to Doug. My deepest condolences to Doug's family. Rest in Peace, my brother... you are now among the stars! - Posted by: Terry W (Friend) on: May 21, 2022

  • Doug will be missed, his humour, his willingness to assist a person in need, even his dad jokes and occasional puns. My love to Boadicea and the family. May his memory be a blessing. - Posted by: LéAmber Kensley (Friend) on: May 09, 2022
