JOHN G. BERGEN
August 27, 1931 - June 3, 2022

John Bergen was born August 27,1931 in the village of Hochfeld, Manitoba to Gerhard and Justina Bergen (Thiessen). Their family consisted of two girls and five boys of whom he was the second youngest.
John passed away peacefully in his sleep at Bethania Mennonite Personal Care Home due to coronary heart failure.
He is survived by his son, Donald (Myrna), daughter, Janice (David); four grandchildren, Timothy (Brooke), Matthew (Elya), Luke (Jana-Lyn) and Nicole (Micah); two siblings, Jake, Isaak (Elsie); and sister-in-law Betty.
At the age of five, he moved to a new homestead in Wingham. John attended the Wingham School for 11 years and had many fond memories of those days. In 1950 upon the confession of his faith, he was baptized in the Wingham Mennonite Church by Bishop John Bueckert. In the fall of 1951, John and his twin brother Jake moved to Winnipeg where they enrolled in Success Commercial College. John graduated with a diploma in accounting and found work at Inland Steel and Forging where he worked as accountant/sales manager for 28 years before spending his last 11 years as president. He really enjoyed his 39 plus years at Inland where he was treated very well.
In 1958 he married Mary Friesen of Arnaud, they were blessed with two children, Don and Jan, and four grandchildren. In 1960 John and Mary joined the Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church where he served in Men's club, Youth, boy's club, choir, Sunday school teacher and Superintendent, church council and congregation chair.
John retired in 1991 and in 1992 became involved in voluntary service with SOWERs (Servants On Wheels Ever Ready). This gave John and Mary the opportunity to serve at camps, churches and other Christian organizations during the winter months for 19 years.
John was always active in sports; hockey and baseball as a youth, curling and golf as an adult. He found this to be a good time of fellowship with friends.
In June 2017, John and Mary moved into Concordia village where he continued to live on his own for two years after losing the love of his life after 61 years of marriage.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba.
