It is with sadness we announce the passing of Anita, at home, on June 23, 2022, surrounded by her loving family. She was proud to be their mother.
Anita was predeceased by her parents, Frank and Annie Matheson (Jackson); Tom, her loving husband of nearly 61 years and her sister Doreen McNeill.
She will be remembered by her children: Diane (Vince) Ryz and their children, Michael (Jill), Jason (Amanda), Kristin, Andrew, Matthew (Melodie) and Ashley (Conner McNaughton); Linda (Dennis) Mitchell and their children, Ryan (Jessica), Erin, and Kevin (Hayley); Jim (Pearl) and his children, Thomas and Michelle; Robert (Karla) and their children, Braden (Karlee) and Ty; six great-grandchildren, Ben and Zoe Ryz, Georgia and Barrett and Aiden Mitchell and Maverick Matthews; brothers, Les (Thelma) and Tom (aka Lynn) (Gloria); brother-in-law Don McNeill. Anita is also survived by nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.
Anita was born on the dairy farm in Russell, MB with her twin brother Lynn on November 12, 1935. She moved to Winnipeg with her family in 1949 where she attended General Wolfe and Daniel McIntyre schools.
Anita worked at Eaton's in the major appliance office until she married Tom Matthews in 1957. Tom and Anita lived in Tom's family home in Fort Garry where they raised their four children whom she loved deeply.
They bought an island at Clearwater Bay, ON in 1966 where Anita spent the summers with the children doing all the fun things people do at the lake. Tom and Anita entertained many groups of relatives and friends on weekends. Anita liked to read, knit, garden, cook and do puzzles. She also played bridge and golf. She enjoyed most sports and old movies on T.V.
Tom and Anita spent winters in Florida from the early 1980s until 2010. They formed many long lasting friendships.
Tom and Anita spent five years in Palm Desert, CA from 2010 to 2015 before realizing their travelling days were over. Tom and Anita were fortunate to have travelled extensively worldwide seeing many interesting countries. They also went on many cruises.
Thank you to Home Instead (JoJo) and Happi who helped Tom for his last year and stayed on with Anita part time. You were very helpful to her. Thank you to Dr. D. Hartley (Irene) and Dr. R. Visser, to Palliative Care Team and the MAiD team for making her passing peaceful for the family.
Anita has been cremated and her ashes will be scattered by her family with Tom's on the Island. There will be no funeral or celebration. Thomson "In the Park" in care.
