SYLVIA UNA SIGURDSON
1936 2022
It is with such profound sadness that we announce the unexpected passing of our Cherished and most Beautiful Mom, Amma and Lang Amma on June 26, 2022.
She will be forever loved and so deeply missed by her adoring daughters, Thora (Kim), Carol; grandsons, Garrett (Stephanie) and Brayden (Emily); and her great-grandchildren, Logan, Nixon and Christian. She was predeceased by her devoted husband Thor, of 53 years in 2013 and her baby girl Cindy in 2018, amongst numerous other beloved family and friends.
Mom was born on July 22, 1936 in Winnipegosis, MB to her loving parents Malvin and Borga Einarson. She grew up as the baby of the family with two older brothers, Malvin and Lloyd, where they spent their growing years working in the family store and she had so many treasured memories of their family times together.
Mom left Winnipegosis to attend teacher's college in Winnipeg as a young adult. She was a wonderful teacher and even to this day would talk about her many students! As always, we know she touched and left such an imprint on SO many lives ... all through her 85 years!!
Mom and Dad met and then married in 1960! Their marriage was such a foundation for us girls of guidance; lessons; endless opportunities; forever support and always ... such unconditional love!!!
Born to Icelandic immigrant parents, Mom was strongly proud of her heritage and was fluent in all aspects of speaking, writing and translating the Icelandic language. She and Dad made many trips to Iceland and always kept close ties to our many relatives over there! Also, SO many trips for family events across Canada as well as trips to Hawaii; Bahamas; England and all throughout the United States.
Even as a little girl Mom absolutely ADORED music!! She could sing like a bird and would often tell us how she treasured her days singing with her "Lang Amma" who she believed she inherited her God given "talent" from! Her LOVE of gospel music led her to sing in many Church choirs throughout her life. She also sang for the Winnipeg Philharmonic and Oratorio Choirs for many years as well as being asked to solo at many weddings and funeral services. Her unending Faith was also such an extreme pillar to our growing years and has gifted her (and us all!) the most strength throughout our lives!!
Above all, her exceptional priority and endless LOVE for ALL family was unprecedented!! Mom and Dad wouldn't think twice about travelling thousands of miles to attend a wedding; graduation or ANY event for anyone!! We see this with the unbelievable outpouring of Prayers; Love and Memories for her right now!! An Angel has been taken "Home!" and she is singing with the Angel's Choir now!!!
Mom ... you have been our inspiration, and rock all of our lives and we will forever be eternally grateful for the guidance, wisdom, strength and faith that you raised and instilled in us. We love you more than any words can describe and look forward to joining you in our new home in Heaven when we too get called to be in the presence of God!!
A "Celebration of Life!" will be held on Wednesday, July 6, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. at Sherwood Park Lutheran Church, 7 Tudor Cres., Winnipeg, MB.
Although you cannot hear her voice
Or see her smile no more,
Your Mother walks beside you still
As she always did before.
She listens to your stories and
wipes away your tears;
She wraps her arms around you
and she understands your fears
It's just she isn't visible
to see with human eye,
but talk to her in silence and
her spirit will reply
You'll feel the Love she has for you -
You'll hear her in your heart;
She's left her human body but
Your souls will never part!

My condolences to the family, Thora and Carol the service was great. The video of pictures was awesome. I laughed when you mentioned she used to sing to you when you woke up - my mom and dad knew the same song: "Good morning to YOU, Good Morning to YOU..." Aunty Sylvia was one of a kind, a true gentle soul always happy and had a knack for making people laugh with her seemingly endless one liners. She and Uncle Thor were my God Parents and I treasure the memories of the visits at their home on Fontaine Crescent. Aunty Sylvia is in a better place now, and is hopefully chatting it up with all the others that went before her. She always gave me a hug and was so proud of my accomplishments it added a confidence to me that I carry to this day. God bless you Aunty and say hi to Cindy and Uncle Thor. Until we meet again, Love Scottie - Posted by: Scott Borgfjord (godson, nephew) on: Jul 20, 2022

My deepest condolences on the loss of your beautiful Mother. While it has been many years. I last saw Sylvia and Cindy and, as ways, was greeted with smiles and hugs. Your Mom and Dad are some of my fondest memories of my early years in Arnes. Your tribute is lovely and your Mom did grace us all with her energetic and sincere love. May you memories give you comfort. Sending love and comfort Patsy🤍 - Posted by: Pat Helgason McKetchen (Friend ) on: Jul 10, 2022

Carol, Thora, and family. I am so sorry to read that your beautiful Mom has joined your Dad and Cindy in heaven. She was such a wonderful lady - always had a smile and cheery voice. When she was talking to me, she made me feel like I was the most important person in the world, even though we barely knew each other. I know how special she was to you and you will feel her loss for a long time. My deepest sympathy to all of you. - Posted by: Donna Friesen (Dorward) (friend) on: Jul 06, 2022

My Dear Aunty. Here I am saddened by your passing but truly happy with all the memories that you created for me. There is one memory that stands out for me and it was on an occasion that was one of many trips that Fawn, Tasha and I took to Winnipeg. I believe it was on an Easter trip and It was was the first time meeting Fawn's relatives. I was trying to be helpful and Aunty needed some groceries for Easter supper and I volunteered to drive her to the grocery store. As we were standing at the cashier and Aunty was paying and of course she knew the cashier and she proceeds to introduce me as her niece's fiance. I was a little taken back as I was meeting her for the first time and Fawn & I had just started dating but I just went with it and continued on with the excursion and headed for home. From that day I was blessed to have been taken into the family. Aunty always showed love to everyone she met and always looked at the positives in life. She loved unconditionally. To this day I have not met a lady that always had hugs and kisses for all her kids myself of course because I am her favorite Nephew. You are not here in body but we all will take comfort in that your spirit will live on through all the cherished memories you help create, you made this world a better place. Love you always until we meet again. Your nephew Raymond. - Posted by: Ray Nielsen (Nephew) on: Jul 05, 2022

Sylvia was my Grade 2 teacher in Winnipegosis. I always tell the story about what she would do when we misbehaved in class. My girlfriend and I sat across from each other and whenever we talked or were giggling she would draw a circle on the blackboard and we would have to put our nose in that circle. Sylvia was a dear friend of my oldest sister Lillian who passed away last October. Sylvia had a beautiful singing voice. She sang at my parents’ 50th Anniversary. My deepest condolences to Sylvia’s family. - Posted by: Eva Fleming (Former pupil.) on: Jul 04, 2022

Heaven has received a precious gift. I can only imagine the reunion and the greeting my loving and beautiful Aunty received from the Father about how she lived her life. She lived life to the fullest and loved everyone unconditionally. I know the Lord and chorus of angels had a grand welcoming for her. I picture Uncle Thor and Cindy standing in the front. I picture her standing in the light of God and what He might say to her, “It is well with my heart, sweet and loyal child.” Love you always and forever. Fawn, Ray and family. - Posted by: Fawn Nielsen (Neice ) on: Jul 02, 2022
