ELIZABETH JEANETTE TURTON
(nee SMEREK)

The sun went a bit dimmer for a moment with her passing and now the sky has one more shining star in our galaxy. On June 29, 2022, our mom, Elizabeth, passed away after a short stay in hospital after a lengthy battle with Rheumatoid Arthritis.
Mom was born in Bienfait, Saskatchewan October 28, 1939. After high school she attended St. Boniface School of Nursing in Winnipeg and received her Registered Nursing Diploma. She loved her career as a nurse. Mom married Dad, Ralph on June 23, 1962.
Mom was blessed with three children: Kim, Sandra, and Brian. In 1977 she was diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Sadly, she had to leave her career as an RN. Mom volunteered with St. Andrews Light Horse & Pony 4-H Club, St. Andrews Horse Association, and the Triple S Ag Society. In February 2022 Mom and Dad moved to Kildonan House where she made many new friends.
She was predeceased by her daughter Sandra and her parents, Dmytro and Victoria Smerek. Mom will be missed by her children, Kim Sysa (Martin), Brian (Maria), grandsons, Matthew and Wesley (Tia), her sisters, Marjorie and Sharon and many relatives and friends.
Gratitude and thanks to her physicians, Dr. M.B. MacMillan, Dr. L. Madi, Dr. A. Man and at Health Sciences Centre GH6 Dr. C. Ramsay and the staff who gave her the best care with kindness and compassion and preserved her dignity.
Family and friends are invited to attend a celebration of Elizabeth's life on Wednesday, July 13 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg.
Flowers are gratefully declined; donations may be made in Elizabeth's name to the Arthritis Society of Manitoba.

  • Our condolences to Ralph & family. Elizabeth was a wonderful mentor as a St. B. Grad, she was kind & helpful to the student nurses that were privileged to be on her ward. Her witty comments & sense of humour often lightened a situation. Her strong faith was obvious as her life was often challenging as she coped with R.A. Rest In Peace,Elizabeth. • Elizabeth was one of my older sisters. She was bright, always had a good nature and very compassionate. Elizabeth had a way of making you smile or laugh when everything seemed down. I liked going to Winnipeg and stayed at her home from time to time. She had family reunions and a beautiful wedding anniversary celebration. I often look at those pictures, they bring back good memories. As a child, I used to scare her with a baby mouse that I put in her dresser drawers I was a naughty little sister. I am going to miss Elizabeth. The good memories will never fade. My condolences to Ralph (husband), Kim (Martin), Brian (Maria) and all the family members. Elizabeth was truly a shining star. - Posted by: Sharon Smerek (Sister) on: Jul 12, 2022

  • We met Elizabeth when playing Whist at Cloverdale United Church. It was always a delight to speak with her, especially as we shared a love of horses. We had great admiration for her spirit, and continued pleasant nature, despite her hardships. Condolences to Ralph and family. She will be missed. - Posted by: Ishbel and Michael Moore (Friend) on: Jul 12, 2022

  • Auntie Elizabeth was the Godmother of our oldest son - Daniel. She kept her faith and shared it with others. She loved her hummingbirds, the flowers in her yard, visiting family, going to church and meeting friends for coffee. She had many stories from her nursing experience and much knowledge to share with others. I wish you could have seen her when her and I made a trip to Grand Forks, she was so excited. She was rushing in and out of isles and stores, wanting to see everything like a kid in a candy store. Auntie Elizabeth; Your love and gentle glow will always be in our hearts. - Posted by: Eunice Senio (Niece) on: Jul 12, 2022
