GEORGE BJORN BJARNARSON
In the early hours of July 3, 2022, in his 90th year, our dad, George Bjorn Bjarnarson, accepted his new position as angel, leaving us to sadly announce his passing.
George was predeceased by his wife Sheila Bjarnarson, his sisters Mary Mull (Lukus) and Inez Rinn, his father and mother George and Mary Lukus, his adoptive parents Bjorn and Elizabeth Bjarnarson and many extended family members.
He is survived by his daughters Leah (Rob Malech), Christie and Beth, his brother-in-law and sister-in-law Dennis and Irma Aubertin and numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.
Dad was fond of telling us he was born at home, in a log cabin in the R.M. of Lakeview, Manitoba. When orphaned at an early age, he and his sister Mary were raised by different families, Dad being adopted by Barney and Elizabeth Bjarnarson of Langruth.
Dad received his elementary and middle school education in Langruth and completed his high school education at United College (University of Winnipeg). He then attended at the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Manitoba, for a year until he accepted a position with Land Titles, Province of Manitoba. Dad worked over 40 years with Land Titles (37 consecutive years) and held the position of Senior Survey Examiner at the time of his retirement in 1994. In addition to working with the Province of Manitoba, in his younger years he helped his dad, Barney, at the family-owned Langruth Solo store (even learning a bit of the art of butchering). As well, during one break from Land Titles, Dad worked on the Mid Canada Line in Bird, Manitoba.
In 1959 while working with his Dad, he met and fell in love with Sheila Moffat. They were married for 43 years and raised three daughters, Leah, Christie and Beth. To Dad, family was everything and he enjoyed and supported his daughters' many activities. He was chauffeur and cheering squad rolled into one. The family enjoyed annual summer vacations at Grand Beach which was Dad's favorite beach until 1983 when he took the family to Waikiki Beach!
In addition to family and travelling, Dad was passionate about a number of other interests and hobbies. Until fairly recently, he cultivated bountiful gardens each year and took pleasure in sharing his harvest with family, neighbours and friends. He was very fond of photography and was the photographer for numerous family events. After he retired, Dad discovered a new love, golf, which he pursued with great enthusiasm for many years. He was also an ardent Jets fan having season tickets to every year of the Winnipeg Jets 1.0.
We would like to thank Dad's amazing neighbours, the Wallds and the Penners for their incredible concern and support during this time. The family is grateful to Dad's physiotherapist, Denise, who helped him physically, mentally and emotionally for a number of years and to Dr. Grass, Dad's physician. Thanks also to Nurse Practitioner Marvin de Castro for his wonderful care of Dad. Special thanks to the numerous Home Care case coordinators, nurses and aides and to the WRHA's Palliative Care Program including case coordinator Sara, nurses Trish, Helen, Amanda and Sheila and Dr. Cox who were there whenever needed and helped make possible Dad's wish of living at home until his death.
Leah, Christie and Rob would also like to extend their deepest appreciation to their sister Beth, who took such excellent care of Dad for the last five years.
The celebration of Dad's life will take place on Saturday, July 23 at 2:00 p.m at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Avenue.
