NORMAN EDWARD STEWART
October 28, 1954 - July 6, 2022

It is with profound sadness and regret that the family of Norman Edward Stewart inform those closest to him of his unfortunate passing on July 6, 2022, as he peacefully slept.
Norman was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba and was the final piece to the proud family that Melbourne and Phyllis Stewart built which all started with his older sister Donna. Growing up Norman had a childhood filled with love, laughter and friendship that seamlessly transitioned over to his teenage and adult years. While attending a social in 1979 Norman happened to run into a young woman by the name of Catherine Williams. Little did he know that the conversation he sparked up that night would lead up to their wedding on July 18, 1981. In July of 1990 to their astonishment, Norman and Catherine were blessed twice in the month when they welcomed both their daughters, Candice and Brittany. Norman instantly fell in love with them and at every opportunity would spend time with them, raising them in his household the exact same way he was raised as a child, in kindness and unconditional love. As the years went on Candice and Brittany began their love for soccer and as one would suspect, Norman could be found in the stands wearing his orange poncho supporting his girls wearing a warm smile. When Norman was not at home or on the soccer pitch he could be found working as a travelling salesman spreading his infectious laughter in the Manitoba / Saskatchewan region. Norman loved watching sports and keeping up with world events but his one passion that he enjoyed with his whole heart was swimming. You could find Norman at the crack of dawn walking down to the beach, towel in hand ready to take on his "polar plunge swim", sometimes with both his daughters, sometimes just with Candice and often at times by himself. Norman cared greatly and loved deeply. His family looks to carry on this endeavour raising his grandchildren, Leopold and Millie, in the same way he raised his daughters.

We love you Dad.
We will forever carry you with us.

Condolences & Memories (7 entries)

  • It is hard to believe that Norm has been gone for a full year! I think of Norm quite often and still remember quite a few of our adventures together. When I moved out of my parents house for the first time it was with Norm to an apartment we shared together in Rotunda Towers in St. Vital. Norm was the seasoned veteran as he previously had his own apartment off River Road. Unfortunately he still had his giant plaster fireplace that he was lugging around (very heavy). We were fortunate to have a pizza joint around the corner or we would have starved. Norm moved onto Saskatoon from there and took his fireplace with him. I know that when Norm became a father he loved his children and was very proud to tell his friends all about their adventures as they were growing into the fine young women they have become. He was a very proud grandfather and it was sad to see his declining health keeping him from enjoying them even more then he did. His last few years were a struggle but it did not keep Norm from enjoying life and the company of his family and friends. Norm was always the kind hearted guy that just wanted everyone to get along and be happy. We miss you Norm !! Marvin Chitick - Posted by: Marvin Chittick (friend) on: Jul 05, 2023

  • So sorry to hear of Norm's passing. I was lucky to have him as a neighbour on Clonard and then again when we would see one another at Safeway on Osborne; and when seeing one another at Lord Roberts/Riverview events. My condolences to the family. - Posted by: Nancy Gillen (nee Johnston) (Friend/Neighbor ) on: Sep 14, 2022

  • Norm was a great friend. Glenwood community club teen dances. Parties sharing friendship with a lot of Glenwood and Glenlawn memories. Past president of Glenlawn collegiate. I remember the first time he met Cathy. His friendship with Marvin Chittick until the end. Thanks Marvin you were a true friend to Norm. 🙏 - Posted by: Jim Haslund (Friend ) on: Jul 11, 2022

  • I so remember Norm (with his bright red hair if memory serves me right) during our Glenlawn School days. He could be found at the Glenwood Friday evening dances and enjoying all his friends. I lost contact with a lot of my friends through the years as Gary & I left Winnipeg in 1975 and moved through Saskatchewan, Alberta, BC and now back to Okotoks. I still remember what a friendly and happy person that Norm was and enjoyed our school years together. He will be missed by all his family and friends for sure. - Posted by: Glenda (Moloski) Hutchinson (Friend) on: Jul 11, 2022

  • Norm was a true gentle man. I have always known him as a humble and loving person. Respectful and mature beyond his years. Maybe that’s why he was Student body President at Glenlawn Collegiate. Obviously his parents had a big influence on him. We lost track a bit in our busy lives but reconnected later with our friend Marv. We enjoyed many birthday lunches together over the last number of years. Norm gave me an introduction into distance swimming which I enjoyed for many years. I can still remember our discussion about this pastime at our friends (Neil McLean) funeral. He laughed when he asked you sure you want to do this?? Even with his Parkinson’s and care home lockdown because of Covid he tried his best because to be a swimmer in the middle of a lake there is no time to quit. He was a dedicated father who loved his daughters and especially his grandchildren where Marv and I could always see the pride when asked about them at one of our visits or lunch. RIP my Friend … you will be missed … swim some laps for me!! - Posted by: John Mitchell (Friend ) on: Jul 11, 2022

  • So sorry to learn of Norm's passing. I was glad that we were able to visit a few years ago and catch up on things. I fondly remember trips to his family's cottage, leaving to use pocket knives safely when we were in scouts, and formal Sunday dinners wearing jackets and ties at our Grandma's. - Posted by: Kevin and Gladys Stewart (Cousin) on: Jul 09, 2022

  • We are so sorry to hear of Norm’s Passing. Larry and Norm became friends in their teens. I first met Norm when I started dating Larry in 1973. Norm became a close friend to us both. We left Winnipeg in 1976 but remember when we lived in Regina and Norm was living in Saskatoon we would visit often. We then moved on to Calgary and unfortunately lost touch with quite a few of our Winnipeg friends. Norm was such a kind and caring person. Our hearts go out to you all in your time of sorrow. - Posted by: Larry & Beatrice Johnston (Friends) on: Jul 09, 2022
