MARIE SPEISER
Our family is deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Marie Speiser on Saturday, July 9, 2022.
Marie was born on May 20, 1935 at Waldheim, Saskatchewan. She attended Hepburn High School and Bethany Bible School in Hepburn before going to Teachers College. She started teaching Grade 2 in Beechy and then Grade 4 in Outlook. Later, she was a librarian and taught high school subjects in Cupar and Lanigan, where, for the last seven of her 28 years of teaching, she taught only Grade 9 - 12 Art. Marie developed the art program in Lanigan that brought student art to the local community. After retiring from teaching, in 1998 Marie agreed to be the Director for Carmel House in Saskatoon, a boys' group home, for two months; ten years later, in 2008, she told the Board they had to find a new Director.
Throughout her life, Marie was deeply committed to having God's love flow through her, using her God-given talents to help and bless others. This was demonstrated by leading church choirs, giving inspiring talks to Gideon ladies, being the first woman on the Bethany Board and in the way she helped to change the lives of the Carmel House boys. Marie was a masterful relationship-builder, mentoring countless students as well as her Carmel House boys.
She was a devoted and loving mother and grandmother, mischievous card-player, charismatic story-teller, an advocate for women in leadership and never one to back down from a challenge.
Marie was predeceased by her sister Esther (Herman) and brothers, John (Margaret), Peter, Dan (Betty); she is survived by husband Larry; children, Russell (Marjorie), Valerie (Steven), Gregory (Cynthia); grandsons, Maxwell and Thomas, as well as brother Rueben (Linda) and sister-in-law Betty.
The funeral service will be held at Fort Garry Mennonite Brethren Church, 1771 Pembina Hwy., on Saturday, July 16, 2022 at 10:00 a.m. and it will be livestreamed. The obituary may also be viewed at www.friendsfs.ca
In lieu of flowers, donations are appreciated for ShareWord Global (formerly Gideons).

I am deeply saddened to hear of Marie's passing. She was a wonderful teacher and I truly admired her. Not only was she a talented art teacher, it was obvious that she also loved literature and captivated her students with the novels she chose for English 10. I was inspired by our conversations. When I think back to my favourite teachers, she is one of them. Sincere condolences to all of the family. - Posted by: Kim Huculak (Nee Leffler) (Student) on: Sep 07, 2022

I am sorry to hear about Aunt Marie's passing. My childhood memories of going to visit Uncle Larry and Aunt Marie are filled with a home dedicated to music and evangelism. My cousins Russ, Greg and Val always had musical instruments around the house and music was very much part of their lives. Aunt Marie was larger than life, in my mind - effervescent and enthusiastic. I know that she made a positive impact on many people in her life and will be sadly missed. - Posted by: Ruby Willems (cousin, niece) on: Jul 13, 2022
