JOHN JACOB NEUFELD
September 23, 1942 July 16, 2022
Our gentle, kind and giving Dad, Grampa or Opa, Uncle and loving Husband has been given a new volunteer opportunity. He rejoined his two brothers, Vern and Jake, and many friends with whom he has missed having a drink lately.
He leaves behind his wife Doris (née Chartier) who cared for him until his last hours, his two boys: Daniel and Rodney (and Bente), his grandchildren: Alex and Jaime, Niklas and Katia, his sister-in-law Elma, brother-in-law Marcel, his nieces and nephews, but also the countless people he helped, served, coached, umpired, taught, built things for, or otherwise gave his time. They will carry on his good efforts making people smile, telling stories, singing and playing the piano and guitar, barbecuing, wood-working, teaching, and patiently listening to every story a youngster has to share.
He'll be off the hook from running to Safeways for a missing ingredient, serving heavenly pancakes, or running the angel's ball league, since he did enough of that on Earth. He ran the Knights of Columbus little league for so long that the kids he first coached later registered their children for ball.
John will be watching over the little Mennonite town of Grunthal where he grew up, on a small farm, in the most loving family. Here he developed his strong sense of community, hard work, love for music and charity. The youngest of three boys, he was a responsible farm hand, strong student, and only occasionally got up to mischief. In his free time, he helped flood the rink, but played too, as well as baseball and football - always team sports. In heaven, he will relish lacing them up again, and lacing up the tiny skates of all the little ones as well. He was an expert at warming frozen toes.
After moving to Winnipeg, he met a cute French girl from Marchand. She and Johnny married, moved in together and four years later bought a house in Transcona. He worked at Qualico Construction, Sprague Distributors and finally Woodland Supply. His new community embraced him, in particular, the caring neighbours on Whitehall Boulevard, the other volunteers at Oxford Heights Community Centre and his fellow parishioners at Blessed Sacrament. His mark on Transcona is seen on the crescent that bears his name.
He has left clear instructions for us all to just get along. We should always pause to take in a prairie sunset or the geese flying over, scratch a cow's ear, and build a snow fort. Indeed, we could be more like him: patient and resilient, leading by example, and supporting one another with good deeds and wise, kind words. He was our mentor, inventor, and friend.
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, August 20, 2022 at 10:30 a.m. at Blessed Sacrament Parish, 710 Roanoke St., Winnipeg, Manitoba (just a line drive away from his ball diamonds). Lunch will follow at a venue nearby.
In lieu of flowers, kindly donate your time or money to a local charity. Besides children's sports, John's favourites were the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Diabetes Canada, and CancerCare Manitoba.

My Uncle Johnny was an amazing guy who played a big part in my life. Along with my Auntie Doris he was always there for me whether it be for my birthdays, graduation and even my wedding. He was there even in tough times when I needed him to drive me to doctors’ appointments and chemo and radiation. There are so many great memories of pool parties, deep discussions, sharing a drink and many Christmas Eves and New Year’s Days spent together. The music was always flowing and the hugs were a plenty. I will miss you Uncle Johnny. Heaven just gained a special angel. - Posted by: Christy (Grand-Niece) on: Jul 23, 2022
