LILLIAN SLAMA
Peacefully on August 2, 2022, Lillian Slama went to meet her Savior in her eternal home in Heaven. She was 86 years old.
Lillian was predeceased by her parents, James Komenda and Olga Komenda (Lysack); her nephew Michael Komenda and nephew Nathan Munchinsky.
She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Walter Ruben (Wally); son Kenneth (Ardelle) and daughter Sherri; brothers, Leonard (Judith) Komenda, Ben (Valerie) Komenda and Jim (Alixe) Komenda; and sister Aileen (Lionel) Shewchuk, as well as her extended family and friends.
Lillian was born in Minitonas, Manitoba on April 23, 1936. She enjoyed working with her parents in the family store, where her friends benefited from her generous gifting of candy and chocolate. This early experience in business later helped Lillian stretch a dollar when managing her family.
She went to Caronport, Saskatchewan for high school. After graduating she moved to Winnipeg. During this time, she shared an apartment with a group of close girlfriends where they enjoyed much laughter and many fond memories.
After attending Success Business College, she secured positions with Reimer Express and later the Government of Manitoba.
Lillian's faith was an integral part of her life. While attending Grant Memorial Baptist Church she met Wally and they were married on October 5, 1963. Lillian and Wally both had the same birthday ensuring Wally never forgot that special day. She served many roles in the church including deaconess, singing in the choir and cooking at Bird River Bible Camp. Many lifelong friendships were developed through bible studies and church events.
Lillian was passionate about her family and provided a warm and caring home environment; the needs of her family always came first. She chose to be a stay-at-home mom and took pride in being a thoughtful home-maker. She was deeply involved in her children's upbringing. School was important and after school activities were mandatory. She believed in providing numerous opportunities to grow her children.
Lillian made family gatherings a special time. She was confident in the kitchen and enjoyed preparing huge meals and seeing the people she loved spending time together. She was content to serve and didn't look for any recognition.
She expressed her creative and artistic side through cake decorating, baking and making fancy sandwiches. She made elaborate cakes for weddings, baby showers, birthdays and too many pies and school cupcakes to count. Lillian enjoyed caning and freezing the harvest from her garden and apple tree. She enjoyed teaching and sharing these skills with others.
She was a skilled seamstress, sewing many costumes and patching countless worn jean knees.
Lillian and Wally enjoyed travelling and experiencing new places. A bus trip to Branson, Missouri and time spent in Scottsdale, Arizona with friends were highlights. Local excursions to country gospel toe-tapping jamborees were a summertime favorite.
She loved music and insisted that her children experience it also. She was part of several choirs which allowed her to express her praise to her Savior. In her last days Lillian was always surrounded by hymns and comforted by the truth and meaning in the songs.
Our family would like to extend a heart-felt thank you to the staff at Deer Lodge Hospital for their kind and compassionate care. They went over and above by getting to know mom and taking the time to comfort and support her during her final days.
Lillian will be missed.
