DAVIS: Doreen Merle (nee Coates). Surrounded by her family it is with great sadness and heartbreak we announce the sudden but peaceful passing of Doreen on the early morning hours of June 2, 2022 at the Assiniboine Centre Brandon. Doreen was born March 13, 1934 in Assiniboia Sk. She was the youngest of four siblings born to Marion and James Coates. The family later moved to Melita. When she was barely a teenager her mom and dad passed away within two years of each other. Mom grew up living with her older sister Mavis and Aunt Jen. Mom finished Grade 11 and went to work as a telephone operator. During this time she met her future husband Mel, and they were married June 17, 1953. Mel and Doreen went on to have five children: Melva (passed away 1959), Gary, Linda, Kent, and Wayne. In 1979 mom completed her Grade 12 education and by the next year was recruited as the Home Care Supervisor for the Melita and Area Health District. Soon the grandchildren started to arrive, and in more recent years the great-grandchildren. Mom was always very, very proud of each and every one of them. She loved them deeply and coming or going - hugs were a must! Without a doubt her family was her absolute greatest joy. Mom made countless quilts for all of us and knitted sweaters for birthdays and Christmas presents, or 'just because'. The camera was always out and because of her photography diligence, annual albums were given forward at birthdays – they will be such a keepsake. Doreen is survived by her loving husband Mel, their children Gary (Llana), Linda (Ken), Kent (Elina), Wayne (Pamela), nine grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. She was predeceased by daughter Melva, parents James and Marion, siblings Mavis, Mert, and Don. She will be missed terribly. In time we will all smile again with our memories, remember the love we have for her, and be grateful knowing how much she deeply loved us. Celebration of life was held on June 15 at Knox United Church. Interment on June 15 at Melita Cemetery. Donations in memory of Doreen may be made to Canadian Cancer Society, 415 1st Street, Brandon, MB. R7A 2W8. Redpath Funeral Home of Melita in care of arrangements. We would like to pass on our heartfelt thanks to everyone who called, stopped by, delivered food, flowers, sent cards, gave hugs, and shared stories. To Kurt and members of Redpath, Craig our minister at Knox, and Joe Ball for staying by our side at the hospital, your gentle, caring, compassionate guidance, through all of this will never ever be forgotten. The choir, the pianist, the lunch ladies from Knox, your help with everything was all very much appreciated. The ER staff and caregivers at the Assiniboine Centre, thank you for everything you did. To family and friends who attended the service at the church and the cemetery service in Melita, your presence meant a great deal to us and helped make our loss a little easier to bear. Sincerely, the Davis family.
