GLEN ARTHUR SHAW
1934 - 2022

With his family by his side, Glen passed away peacefully at the Grace Hospital, on October 13, 2022, at the age of 88. He was listening to a jive tune, so you could say, he danced his way to heaven.
He leaves to cherish his memory, his devoted wife, Alice, of 64 years; his four D's, Diane (Lawrence), Doug (Lesa), Darlene (Don) and Debbie (Jim); his grandchildren, Graeme (Morgana), Jennifer (Kyle), Derek (Colin), Jessica (Craig), Karina (Garett), Kevin and Isabelle; great-grandchildren, Owen, Gordy, Harrison, Charlotte, Oliver, and Tavian, who gave him much joy.
Also mourning his loss, his sister Eileen (Mel), brother Raymond (Dianne), in-laws, Bill, Shirley, and Irene. He was predeceased by his parents, Effie and Alfred, Alice's parents, Molly and Ed, brother Alan and sister-in-law Mabel and brother-in-law Klaus.
Glen was born June 14, 1934, in his grandmother's house. Raised in Morris, Glen moved to Winnipeg to find work, which eventually led him to a 40-year career at Canada Safeway Limited. Glen served in the Naval reserve for 10 years as a young man and shared many stories of those sailor days.
He met and married Alice in 1958 and shortly after, along came their 4 D's.
Over the years, Glen was a member of the Rotary club, Thompson Game and Fish, SEA, Breezy Bend golf course and the Wharton Wildcats. He was a hunter, fisherman, cribbage player, slide-shower, golfer, coffee lover, sports fan and music lover. It was pure joy watching him and Alice dance.
He was always the host and master coordinator of family parties around the pool, work events, golf and card tournaments and fish fries. Glen and Alice were avid travellers and made lifelong friends at their snowbird home Island House, Corpus Christi, Texas. He had a love of life, wife, family and friends. Special thanks to Dr. Harvey Lee.
A celebration of Glen's life will take place on Tuesday, October 25, at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue at 1:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, some of Glen's favourite charities, Salvation Army, Siloam Mission, Canadian Cancer Society and the Winnipeg Humane Society

  • I met Glen in Thompson when I was a barber in Thompson in 1970 at the Strand Barber shop owned and operated by Bill Bucholz. Bill and Glen were also friends. In 1972 I was hired at Safeway as a Food Clerk working the midnight shifts floating to various stores in the north district. I ended up on a midnight shift at the Ness & Sturgeon store 6 months into my job/career at Safeway. With Glen's influence with the District Manager Bill Vivian, he managed to get me off the midnight shifts unto day shifts as his full time Day Shift Food Clerk. Eventually he started training me in various departments with my mentors Keith McDougall, Bob McWilliams and Wayne Perkins. Mr. Shaw went on to become District Manager of the North District eventually promoting me into senior management. The rest is history. He was a great Mentor, store Manager, District Manager and human being. Without his quality mentoring and belief in me I would have never gotten to where I am today without Mr. Shaw's wisdom, insight and God's given gift of discernment. He will always be remembered as my personal mentor and lifelong friend. He even gave me a nickname and would say it to me occasionally. "The big Okamow" meaning "The big Indian/Whiteman". On behalf of my wife, Thelma and I, we offer our sincere condolences and prayers to Alice and the entire family. Till we meet him again; God's blessings and comfort to the Shaw family going forward. • To the Shaw family, my deepest condolences on your loss. I had the privilege of working with Glen when he was my north district manager at Canada Safeway. He was a caring individual, who offered me understanding and support when I started in store 584. Later when I transferred into the Human Resources office his wisdom and guidance was still offered. His integrity, kindness and professionalism was always evident. May he Rest In Peace. - Posted by: Jack Wallace (Co worker) on: Oct 25, 2022

  • During the teen years that Doug and I became best friends for life, being in their home was like having a second set of parents and a second home with Glen and Alice. So many fond memories those years that started simply from a family connection and an "in" for a well-paying first job at Safeway that kept giving back to me through my adult life. I've been greatly blessed to have had Glen and all his family in my life. He made a difference, he will be missed, and he will live on in my thoughts and in my heart. - Posted by: Lorry Prokopich (Friend) on: Oct 25, 2022

  • Mr. Shaw was a wonderful man that I met in my very early years in Thompson. Diane and I formed a fast friendship in Grade 3 and our parents also became lifelong friends. One of my special memories was at a sleepover at the Shaw's when Mr. Shaw brought a treat home that Safeway had just started carrying. He allowed me, as the guest at their home, to be the first Thompsonite to try "Bugles"!! The Shaw's moved back to Wpg. although he continued to make treks up north to go hunting for many years with my dad and the gang. Not sure how many animals suffered as a result, but I know the men always had a great time. Mr. Shaw was special enough that I asked him to give the toast to the bride at my wedding....and was he ever entertaining!! He also visited my father on his last day on this earth which was so meaningful to both my dad and our family. I want to offer my deepest condolences to the whole family and would like you to know that you are all in my prayers at this time of loss. May his soul Rest in Peace.
