EDWIN ROSS MACDONALD
July 27, 1927 - October 10, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father and grandfather, Edwin Ross MacDonald.
Ross was predeceased by the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Natalie Joyce MacDonald (nee Bate). Ross leaves behind his son Edwin MacDonald and wife Eileen; grandsons, John and Michael living in Minneapolis; his son Guy MacDonald living in British Columbia, and his daughter Elizabeth Kristjansson and husband Gestur and their two sons, Hunter and Bryce.
He was predeceased by his parents, John Edwin MacDonald and Margaret Lovette Ross MacDonald.
Ross was born on Ash Street in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 27, 1927. Ross started his schooling at Queenston School in River Heights and continued on to St. John's Ravenscourt where he met many of his lifelong friends. Ross cherished and loved to share his memories of Saturday night movies with his parents, late night billiards at his home on Ash Street and working side by side with his father in both manufacturing and the island camp at Lake of the Woods.
Ross graduated with a Bachelor of Arts at the University of Manitoba including a multi-sport Award for Athletic Excellence in 1948; probably the foundation for his enviable fitness and vigor throughout his 95 years. Upon finishing University, Ross went to work for Ontario Hydro then returned to Winnipeg in 1949 to work with his father at MacDonald Brothers Sheet Metal and Fabrication, where he continued in the family business until 1986.
Ross was a supportive and active member of Crescent Fort Rouge United Church, active member of the Masons of Manitoba, Board Member of Canadian National Institute for the Blind, while taking part in many other fundraising initiatives. Ross was always very community minded and gave generously of his time to many charities. Ross believed that everyone needed to do their part and leaves a legacy that values community support and caring for others.
Ross loved his walks in Assiniboine Park, playing the piano, connecting with family and friends, but mostly cherished the time he got to spend with his beloved wife Natalie. Indeed, she has called him back and we are certain that the best is yet to come.
Ross came into the world at home quarantined due to a bout of Scarlett Fever and ironically left in similar circumstances from COVID-19. In accordance with Dad's wishes, interment has taken place.
In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Western Canadian Aviation Museum or a charity of your choice.

Condolences & Memories (6 entries)

  • I met Ross when I was employed in the office of MacDonald Brothers Sheet Metal on Aikins St. I was 16 years old working summers until I was 18 then hired on full time. When staff changes came about in the late 70's many of us kept in touch. Then about 10 years ago, Ross started calling and inviting several of us former employees to come to his home for a Christmas visit. Natalie was there for a couple of those years, then after a time, Ross called a few of us again. We had such a great time reminiscing and enjoying Ross's generous hospitality. Ross would often call me at other times during those years as my dad died in 2003 and was very close to Ross's dad. My dad, George Harper worked in the plant as well as going out to the MacDonald's cottage to help with repairs and such. Mr. Edwin MacDonald was "the boss" when I first started working at their office. A couple of years ago I thought to call Ross, but procrastinated as I didn't hear from him about the annual Christmas visit. He has been on my mind for the past 2 -3 years. Forgive me, family, for not calling to inquire as to his health and well-being. I would have visited him. I miss Ross a lot. Those visits were so special as I looked forward to his call every year. With profound sadness I write this and send my love to all of you. Blessings in abundance, Kathryn - Posted by: Kathryn Harper (Former employee at MacDonald Bros.) on: Aug 06, 2025

  • I met Ross and Natalie several times when they came to Arizona. We both shared the same genealogy lnterest in our Nova Scotia and Glenurquhart Scotland MacDonalds. We shared the same MacDonald GGGGG-GParent. Ross through son James. And I through son Hugh. They were both terrific down to earth people and sadly missed - Posted by: Ben MacDonald (Ma cD.onald) on: Jan 22, 2023

  • From a very young age I recall thinking about what a gentleman "Uncle Ross" was. Out and about he was almost always topped with a fedora, whether on a mundane outing to buy groceries, or while taking Natalie out to Rae & Jerry's on a Saturday evening. Ross was always happy to have a conversation, and it was never garden variety drivel about the weather -- he always displayed a genuine and keen interest in how we were doing. Even well into his 90s I would run into him at Safeway, or on the phone during the pandemic, and he would ask about everyone by name and would want to know how everybody was doing. He will be missed. - Posted by: Graeme MacDonald & Family (Cousin) on: Oct 25, 2022

  • To All the Macdonald Family: My deepest condolences on the loss of your father. Through the years my parents, Ken and Donna Macaw, would see your mum and dad. Those times were always, always cherished and I recall both Ken and Donna recalling parties and get togethers with Natalie and Ross and speaking of them both with the highest regards. In fact, upon my father's death in 2016, your dad, unable to attend the Celebration of Life gathering for my father, wrote my mum a beautiful letter which she kept and now I have to this day. My parents valued the friendship they had with your parents very much. I am so sorry for your loss. - Posted by: Sidney Macaw (family friend) on: Oct 22, 2022
