SHELAGH ANNE HINCH
(nee THOMAS)
Shelagh passed away peacefully at the Golden Links Lodge on November 27, 2022.
Her parents Dorothy and George Thomas, husband Bob Hinch, and sister Audrey Dow predeceased her. Surviving family include her children Barb Gwyer (Brian), Tom Hinch (Lorraine) and Diane Pogue (Lyle), grandchildren Joel (Trish) and Pamela Gwyer (Dan), Lindsay and Gillian Hinch (Brian), and Charlie (Ronnie) and Kirby Pogue (Justin), five great- grandchildren, and sister-in-law Dianne Hanna (Alan).
Shelagh was born in Winnipeg on August 1, 1929 and grew up in the River Heights neighbourhood. In 1950, she graduated from the U of M with a BSc in Home Economics followed by one year of training in Dietetics at the Vancouver General Hospital. On her return to Winnipeg she married Bob in 1953 with Barb arriving on the scene in 1955.
Shortly thereafter, the young family moved to Minnedosa where Bob practiced medicine for the next 30 years. Tom and Diane crashed the party in 1957 and 1959. Shelagh made many close friends in Minnedosa through Sorority, the United Church, and her volunteer activities at Tanners Crossing School, with Mary and Effie Macdonald being particularly close.
Shelagh moved back to Winnipeg in 1985 when Bob retired from his practice due to ill health. She was soon volunteering at the Oak Table based at Augustine United Church. She continued to live independently in her condo for many years after Bob passed (2002), eventually moving to an assisted living community and then to the Golden Links Lodge where she regularly engaged in activities, entertained visitors; and enjoyed chatting with fellow residents and staff.
Shelagh will be remembered as a loving and kind person. She was progressive in her views on life, well-read, and happy to engage in debate to explain her views. Above all, she was caring and compassionate. And she made the best chocolate chip cookies ever!
The family would like to thank the staff at the Golden Links Lodge for their loving care especially during the last few challenging years. You made a difference.
A family service will be held for Shelagh next summer at the Laclu family cottage a place close to her and our hearts. Other friends and acquaintances are encouraged to raise a glass to a life well lived.

Diane and Lyle, Saddened to see in the WFP this weekend that your Mom had passed, Diane. I know you were very close and you will miss her a lot. I remember that she was one of the first grandmothers (that knew of) that got to have her own "granny cottage" at the lake - the whole family will miss having her there. You are in our thoughts. Take care, Blaine and Leona . - Posted by: Leona Nichol (friend, former coworker of Diane's ) on: Dec 07, 2022
