GUENTER ALBERT HEINRICH THOBABEN
January 15, 1943 – November 26, 2022

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Guenter Albert Heinrich Thobaben, on November 26, 2022 at Health Sciences Centre at the age of 79 years.
Guenter was predeceased by his parents, Wilhem and Gerda Thobaben; brother and sister-in-law, Helmut and Cheryl Thobaben.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife of 56 years, Diane Thobaben (nee Miller); daughter Tracy Bauer (Ron); son Trevor Thobaben, and grandsons, Braxton, Brayden and Mason.
Guenter was born in Ihlienworth, Germany and immigrated to Canada with his parents and brother in June 1953. After graduation from high school, Guenter worked for Redboine Sheet Metal (later renamed to Camco Redboine) for 45 years, retiring in 2008. Over the years, Guenter was involved in a variety of sports, including soccer, hockey, baseball (playing with St. Charles Saint's baseball team) and numerous bowling and curling teams. Later in life when Guenter could no longer play sports, he lived vicariously through his grandsons, watching them play their favourite sports while cheering them on from the sidelines.
Our family would like to extend our thanks to the awesome health care teams at Seven Oaks and Health Sciences Centre for their care of Dad, as well as Dr. Bellas and Dr. Perche.
A celebration of Guenter's life will be held on December 5, 2022 at 2:00 p.m., Chapel Lawn Funeral Home and Cemetery, 4000 Portage Avenue, Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I am so sorry to hear of Gunner's passing. We were teammates for over 10 years on the Saints Fastball team in the 80's. Gunner was a terrific player and an even better person. I hadn't seen him for a long time but I surely remember the good old days with fond memories. - Posted by: Bruce Meyers (Teammate and best friend) on: Dec 03, 2022

  • Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of Guenther. I remember him as a gentle, smart, active man with a dry sense of humor. I had the pleasure of bowling with him for several years at St. James Lanes. He was always in a hurry to get home and watch Married with Children, lol. I was asking another team member just a few weeks ago about everyone on our team, so I am saddened to hear of his passing now. Thoughts are with the family at this difficult time. - Posted by: Janis Richards (Bowling team member, St. James Lanes) on: Dec 03, 2022

  • Our deepest and sincere condolences to Diane and family. I meet Gunter when we were around 10 when he moved to Canada from Germany. We lived on Elgin Ave together we played a lot of sports together the first time we played sports together was for St Andrews Church baseball team he played first base, and I played second base a grounder would come to me and I would throw it to Gunter at first base sometimes I would throw a curve ball to him, and he would catch it and hold the ball up and give me that look. Then we played Hockey together for Weston Royals in the old Transcona arena Later on in life we helped Lindsey Tait coach a hockey team in St James years later Gunther and I coached the White Sox Boys baseball team we won the Provincials and went to Victoria for the National championship Gunther was the baseball coach that kept the team well organized he was well respected by all the boys We had a lot of good times together I will miss you my friend - Posted by: Ron & Shirley Lawrence (Friend) on: Dec 03, 2022
