GEERTRUI (TRUUS) CORNELIA OLIVER
(nee PLOMP)

It is with deep sadness we announce the passing of Truus at 92 years of age. Truus passed away peacefully at Riverview Health Centre on December 19, 2022, after a brief illness.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Kent, parents, Teunis and Cornelia Plomp, in-laws, Rev. Dr. Edmund and Mrs. Margurita Oliver, brother Rev. Dr. Tony Plomp, brothers-in-law, Jack Wester, Murray, John, Gordon and Ronald Oliver, sister-in-law Phyllis Oliver and nephew John Oliver.
Truus is lovingly remembered by her sister Maryka Wester, sisters-in-law, Margaret Plomp and Doris Oliver. Also mourning the loss of Truus are nieces, Corinne Wester, Jennifer (Sev) Araujo, Debbie Plomp (Art Gold), Sheila (Rob) Lavender, Joan Macintyre and Janet Oliver, as well as nephews, John Wester (Dawn Wieliczko), Peter (Jean) Oliver, Kent (Sue) Oliver and four great-nieces, eight great-nephews and one great-great- nephew. She leaves behind many dear friends in Winnipeg, throughout Canada and overseas including relatives in the Netherlands. Truus will be greatly missed by her long time Scottish friend Elizabeth Cairns.
Truus was born on May 4, 1930 in Schiebroek, Rotterdam, the Netherlands to Teunis and Cornelia Plomp. After surviving the Second World War, Truus and her family came to Canada in 1951 to Haney, BC. In 1952, she moved east to Winnipeg where she was hired by Miss Elizabeth Dafoe to fill a term position in the University of Manitoba Science Library. Truus held various positions until, in 1959 she joined the newly established Dental Library under Doris Pritchard, Head Librarian. In 1989, after a career spanning 36 years in the University of Manitoba library system, Truus retired as Supervisor from the Neilson Dental Library. Her hard work and knowledgeable expertise gained her the respect of both staff and students and many friendships with colleagues that lasted a lifetime.
In retirement, Truus continued her love of books by volunteering every Wednesday at the Children's Hospital Book Market. You would always see her manning the tables at the various Book Market events. During her 33 years of sorting and pricing, long lasting friendships were created.
Truus was a loyal supporter of the Arts and Culture scene in Winnipeg. She was a faithful 70 year reader of the Free Press, subscriber to the Icelandic Newspaper, season ticket holder for the WSO, RMTC, PTE, WMCW and a faithful Blue Bomber fan! She also supported the Manitoba Chess Association in its staging of the annual Kent Oliver Memorial Tournament and many other endeavours. Truus was a voracious reader and had an interest in a wide variety of subjects. She was versed in global affairs and loved anything about politics. Truus was fascinated with history and her vast knowledge on any subject and recollection of events was astonishing. She loved meeting people and learning about their lives.
Heartfelt thanks to the wonderful, caring staff of Riverview Health Centre, Palliative Care Unit, E3 Ward, for their compassion towards Truus during her final days.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Glen Lawn Funeral Home, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd., Winnipeg, MB. Family and friends wishing to attend the service virtually may do so at:

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • Truus' friendship has been a blessing to me for nearly 5 decades. It began when she was my supervisor at the Dental Library, University of Manitoba with Doris Pritchard as the Librarian. Truus' warm, caring nature made, not just me, but so many people to feel special to her as she was to us in return. Such memories include her & Kent bringing homemade soup over when I was ill with a cold, After I'd moved to Calgary, she sent mementoes to me like newspaper articles and souvenir spoons of my hometown of Souris, Manitoba as she knew intuitively that Souris was my "touchstone" as the Netherlands was to her. I treasure my brief but memorable stay with her while attending a CLA conference and a visit to the Pavilion at Assiniboine Park during that time. Her visit to us in Calgary also meant a great deal to us. Me and my family are not surprised that we are among so many admirers & "kindred spirits" (Anne of Green Gables) of such an engaging, quiet but memorable lady. We miss her. • I am so sorry to hear of Truus' passing. I met Truus when I became the minister of the Churchill Park United Church (in Winnipeg) some years ago. I visited her at home, and how I enjoyed those visits. Truus always sat in the same spot on the couch and, inevitably, there would be books, magazines and papers piled beside her and flowing off nearby surfaces. It was a delight to discuss current events with Truus including, during a recent visit, the Winnipeg municipal election, the global history of xenophobia and attempts to roll back abortion access in the United States. Truus' ferocious intellect was startling, paired as it was with modesty, simplicity, love and concern for others and a deep inner stillness. Truus was not a churchgoer, nor a believer. An early harsh experience of Calvinism left its mark on her. Through her husband, however, Truus became acquainted with the United Church of Canada and found she shared its social values. She often said, of Churchill Park United, "As long as you keep doing good work, I'll keep supporting you." Truus also follow, with pride and interest, her brother's doings and writings in the Presbyterian church. Recently, she loaned me a magazine that featured his writing. What a blessing she was. What a blessing she remains. - Friend, Rev. Dawn Rolke - Posted by: Rev. Dawn Rolke (Friend) on: Jan 12, 2023

  • Truus was a wonderful, faithful friend and colleague. Our closeness started in the early 1950s as colleagues at the Elizabeth Dafoe Library on the University of Manitoba campus. Also, we continued as next-door neighbours again for years. We shared experiences and knowledge about local and global political events for 72 years. Extremely interesting because we we were born and lived with different perspectives. - Posted by: Florence Regehr (Very close and loyal friends for 72years. ) on: Jan 08, 2023
