Offer Condolences or Memory HILDA JANE TALNICOFF (HALVORSON)
February 18, 1936 - January 28, 2023
It is with a heavy heart and great sadness that we announce the passing of Hilda Jane (née Halvorson) Talnicoff on January 28, 2023.
Jane, as she preferred to be called, was predeceased by husband, Daniel Talnicoff; father Harold, mother Hazel, sister Anna, brothers Harvest, Herwin, Henry and Harold. She is remembered by sister-in-law Estelle and husband Iser Kay; and as Auntie Jane by nephew David Kay with wife Sharona and children Tani, Ty and Zevi; nephew Benjamin Kay with wife Alisa and their children Sydney and Ari; niece Kristina Halvorson and husband Alex.
Jane would often tell you that she lucked out by discovering her passion and career in teaching when she tagged along with a friend to Teacher's college in the early 1950s. After a few yearsof teaching Jane decided on the encouragement of her brother Harvest, to go back to school to advance her teaching career. She enrolled in the University of Manitoba where she received a Bachelor of Education. After graduation she found a permanent home in the St. James School division and retired in 1993.
She met her husband and lifelong partner, Dan, at a casual curling practice and the pair connected instantly. Both were pursuing teaching careers and held family very dearly. After a number of years of dating as well as completing their respective additional education, they married in 1977. While Dan was part of the Khartum Shriners, Jane became involved with the Khartum Ladies' Auxiliary. After both of their teaching careers where winding down, the pair decided to start a small business where Auntie Jane crafted teddy bears, painted art on t-shirts, and created crystal angels. The pair enjoyed travelling, attending Jets games, spending summer weekends with family at their cottage in Sandy Hook and winter vacations in Florida.
Jane always had a passion for art! Whether it was visiting a gallery, shopping for art, taking a class or workshop or sitting at home, working in pencils on portrait sketching; art was big part of her life. It was also through art that she connected with her mother and sister Anna. She was a long-time member of the Charleswood Art group where she was active in classes, workshops and participating in sales events. She was never afraid to try something new when it came to crafting and art.
If you were out and about with Auntie Jane, it was a rare day where she didn't run into someone she knew and had to stop to chat. While she loved to chat and socialize, she truly cherished spending time with her close friends. Eleanor Sharby and Dianne March were among her oldest and dearest friends.
She will be remembered as a kind lady, who even after losing her husband, remained independent, never losing her enjoyment of life, surrounding herself with her close friends and family, and maintaining her strong Lutheran faith. Those that remember her know that she was never satisfied, a perfectionist and a stickler for detail. She held it in great regard when someone presented their best in both their appearance and work.
Our gratitude to Ron Long of St. Mark's Lutheran Church for leading a small, private graveside funeral held on February 7, 2023 to celebrate the life of Hilda Jane (Halvorson) Talnicoff.
The family extends its heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Grace Hospital and Home Care for their dedication, kindness, and compassion during Jane's time in their care.
Cards and flowers gratefully declined, instead donations to the Children's Hospital Foundation or charity of your choice, in Jane's name would be gratefully appreciated and preferred.
Memories live forever and
we will always be connected by love.

I met Jane at the Charleswood Art Group and always enjoyed chatting with her. One of my favourite stories was about her first year of teaching in a one room school and sharing the house of an ‘old’ lady where they were separated only by a blanket hanging from the ceiling. She seemed to take very good care of ‘the boys’, her brothers. I often saw her taking them on errands. I’ll miss her at CAG. Jo - Posted by: Jo McKeever (Friend) on: Feb 16, 2023

I enjoyed getting to know Jane, both through St. Mark’s church and the Charleswood Art Group. She was kind, cheerful, funny and always interested in everything going on around her. She supported St. Mark’s and the Art Group and I will miss her in both of those environments. - Posted by: Monica Bailey (Fellow Artist) on: Feb 14, 2023

What a nice lady. The members of Charleswood Art Group will really miss Jane. With her sense of humour and her warmth towards others, she was a ray of sunshine who added something to every meeting she attended. She was an enthusiastic artist who did her own thing. Her sudden passing was a shock to us all, and a sad loss to the club. Keep smiling, Jane. - Posted by: Shirley & Bill Rayner (Friends) on: Feb 12, 2023

Jane was such a special lady, a real gem, whose genuine care and concern for others was complimented by her generosity, her creativity, her sense of style and her quick wit. I remember how she would proudly share what her "kids" were doing, from David and Benji's studies abroad, to Kristina and her love of horses. Jane was like a doting mother to so many including her brothers and sister. She was like my "school Mom" when I began teaching at Linwood. Both from Fannystelle, she would take me under her wing with her guidance. It was Jane who drove me to the hospital when our first child was born earning her another "Auntie Jane" moniker. Blessed are those who had Mrs.Talnicoff as their teacher and Jane as a friend. xoxo - Posted by: Mina McCallum (Friend) on: Feb 11, 2023

When we were young, I would visit Jane and her family often with her Aunt Myrtle and Uncle Vic. I have fond memories of her dear family, her kind mother and how Jane was just like her, so very kind. My deepest sympathy to the family. - Posted by: Doreen Arnal (Morison) (Family friend) on: Feb 11, 2023

My sincerest sympathy to Christine and the Talnicoff family in the passing of Jane. I shall always cherish the memories I hold of Auntie Jane, every Christmas Eve was spent with her and Uncle Danny at my Auntie Eleanor's Home, and before that at my Grandparents home on Manitoba Avenue. Jane became a dearly loved member of our family along with Uncle Danny and shared with us each year our Traditional Ukrainian Christmas Eve Dinner. Auntie Jane always took time to talk to me about school and later work, my interests and encouraged my love for crafts as a child. Later as a teen I looked forward to the subscription to Seventeen Magazine that I received as a Christmas gift for a number of years. Jane always made me feel special and loved and I shall miss her dearly. Uncle Danny and Auntie Jane would drive me to my Church on Christmas Eve for Midnight Mass, and I always enjoyed that one on one time I spent with them on that drop off ride to my Church. I loved listening to Cheesecake and Poundcake, and their loving teasing of each other. I am happy to think that they are now re-united in with our Heavenly Father. I will treasure my memories of you, may your Memory be Eternal! Loved always, Debbie Dolski - Posted by: Debbie Dolski (Friend) on: Feb 11, 2023
