DR. MARCUS HERMANN WALTER HUNZINGER
Dr. Marcus Hermann Walter Hunzinger, our husband, father, papa, uncle, son, brother, friend, teacher, dentist and inspiration to many people, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2023, with his family by his side.
Marcus was born on May 19, 1956 to newly immigrated Drs. Gisela and Werner Hunzinger, in Montréal, Québec. Soon after, Marcus, his two sisters and his parents settled in Winnipeg. The family built memories through travel and camping, until the family fell in love with their favourite sanctuary, Shoal Lake, Ontario. Marcus led a life of devoted service, to his family, to his profession, to his faith and to the community.
He will be lovingly remembered by his cherished wife of 40 years, Catharine Nan Hunzinger (Steel); his treasured children, Erika Gisela Hunzinger, Dr. Vanessa Hillary Margaret Hunzinger (Frazer McLaren), Evan Marcus Hunzinger (Rhianne Hallows); and his two sisters, Verena Hunzinger (Glen Kruck) and Dr. Bettina Veronneau. He was lovingly referred to as "Papa" by his two grandchildren, Axel and Kit McLaren.
Marcus had many accomplishments for which he was very humble. He was a revered dentist of over 40 years who was committed to his patients, many of which he considered good friends. He established his own practice in Winnipeg which demonstrated his excellence, compassion, integrity, and commitment to the profession. In his later years, he became a part-time instructor at his alma mater, University of Manitoba Faculty of Dentistry. He was well-loved by students who respected him for his kindness, professionalism and practicality. His passion for dentistry lives on through his daughter, Vanessa, who he mentored throughout his career.
In his spare time, he focused on his family and improving the places that they loved. He was a fervent builder, fixer and designer of their beautiful home and cottage as well as an avid car enthusiast. At home, he loved to sit and listen to music, especially played on the piano by his daughter Erika, or with his intricate and powerful sound system he built in the basement. Working with his hands, he also enjoyed building model cars, and passing on practical skills to his son, Evan, with whom he continued to build Lego until his very last days. With his wife and best friend, Cathy, he enjoyed going to concerts, spending time with their friends, and just enjoying each other in everyday activities. He brought her coffee every morning, even when stairs had become difficult, and loved to surprise her, including leaving a handwritten love letter that was found hidden in his belongings at the hospital.
All will remember Marcus for his generous spirit and love of life. He took every opportunity to make even simple moments special. He had a deep curiosity for how things work, and getting to know other people. One of his greatest attributes was his ability to make anyone feel important, valued and unique. In this way, he was loved by all.
A sincere thank you to St. Boniface Hospital Palliative Care for their dedicated, thorough and thoughtful care they provided, to Michael Thibert and St. John Brebeuf Catholic Church for supporting Marcus and his family in their faith and understanding of this unanticipated early transition, and to all those who reached out to him or his family during the past months.
The service will be held at St. John Brebeuf Catholic Church, 1707 John Brebeuf Pl., Winnipeg, on February 23, 2023 at 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. John Brebeuf Catholic Parish or CancerCare Manitoba.

Dr. Hunzinger was the best dentist I ever had. I developed a dental phobia as a child and the 15 or so years I saw him in my young adulthood erased my fear. His way of practice literally cured my dental anxiety. Thank you Dr. Hunzinger for bringing patience and comfort to all those you served. - Posted by: Laura (Old patient) on: Feb 03, 2025

Marcus was a great guy. I learned too late about his departure. I'm sorry Cathy for your loss. I will never forget the nice times with Marcus, Mark and you at the comedy club for special occasions. It was definitely warm and pleasant time of my life. Sincerely Tim Varga - Posted by: Timothy Varga (Old patient) on: Sep 25, 2023

My deepest sympathies to Cathy and the family. I had the chance to meet up with Marcus when I worked in his dental clinic in Garden City. What a beautiful soul. Gentle, kind, friendly and so approachable. He was the type of person you could never forget. His pain and sufferings are over, however, I know for the family it has just begun. I hope for your family that time and healing in the wonderful memories you have with him will help you find solace. - Posted by: Sylvia Schurko (Employee) on: Feb 28, 2023

I met and became a patient of Dr. Hunzinger's through his close family friends the Vandale's back when he was still practicing. He was the loveliest person, and my favourite dentist (I had always hated going to the dentist before starting to see him). Gone too soon, but his memory will live on with all those who loved him - condolences to family and friends. xoxo - Posted by: Hannah (Patient) on: Feb 27, 2023

With great sadness .... I cannot even find proper words. He was my first DENTIST after my migrating from my home country, Poland. Even though we lost touch, I considered him not only my doctor but also a FRIEND. Let perpetual light shine upon him. - Posted by: Andrzej Leligdowicz (Old pWith great sadness ....I cannot even find proper words. He was my first DENTIST after my migra) on: Feb 18, 2023
