HARVEY TALLMAN
June 27, 1923 - February 26, 2023
On February 26 Harvey Tallman passed away leaving an immense void in the lives of his friends and family.
Born on the family farm in Tyndall, MB Harvey grew up in Winnipeg's North End during the depression. These difficult times forged his future and he often told the story of living through the Depression and how it shaped his values, reinforcing that failure was simply not an option.
He drove trucks and construction equipment well before he reached the age where he could have a driver's license and quickly learned the best routes to avoid detection. When the Second World War broke out he could not join the Armed Forces due to a skin condition so he joined the war effort by heading north to work on the Alaska Highway. On returning to Winnipeg after the war he sold his truck and used the proceeds to purchase a vehicle dismantling business on Princess Street in Winnipeg. He spent his weekdays dismantling cars and trucks and selling the parts from his store front business. On the weekends he would take a truck and trailer across the border into the Dakotas and Minnesota to find more vehicles to dismantle. The people who he dealt with in those difficult days remained friends through the rest of his and their lives. Through ingenuity, drive and sechel he built Princess Auto into a successful manufacturing, importing, mail order and retail business which he eventually sold to his children in the late 1970s. Today Princess Auto has over 50 stores across Canada and is owned by his grandsons, Matthew and Marc Tallman. They continue the tradition started by their grandfather, the tradition of integrity, honesty and good humour. He was also the co-founder of Mandak Metal Processors in Selkirk, MB.
While not an overtly religious person, Harvey lived by his Jewish faith. He dealt fairly and honestly in both business and family matters. Throughout his almost 100 years of life he did what he thought was the right thing, never cutting corners or taking the easy way out of predicaments. His moral compass was never deflected by circumstances. Right was right, and he always did what he thought was right.
Harvey married the love of his life, Louise, in 1947 and they lived a wonderful and blessed life until Louise's passing in 2020 after 71 years of marriage. It was a true love story and even in the despair of Louise's passing he always said that he was the luckiest man alive for having had the time he spent with her. Harvey's second home was in Palm Springs every winter for over 45 years. It was his happy place. He lived independently until his final days and the Tallman family would like to express their thanks to his friends and frequent visitors and helpers, Michael Gobuty, Gayle Fix, Loralie Bellann, Andy and Laurie Tallman, Thomas Achenbach and Marian Candelaria. Late in life he was lucky to reconnect with a wonderful woman that he had been in kindergarten with in the North End. Claire Pudavick and her family became his second family and together they got much joy in their later years. The Pudavick family's kindness will be cherished forever.
Predeceased by his parents, Michael (Mike) and Clara Tallman (nee Solotrow), brothers, Daniel and Allan and sisters, Esther (Edna) Toews and Marjorie Bellan.
He is survived by his children, Carol Leach (Garry) of Victoria, BC, Larry Tallman (Claire) of The Cayman Islands, Bob Tallman (Cathy) and Joy Hughes both of Winnipeg, as well as his brother Erven Tallman of California. His grandchildren are Brett and Michael Leach, Crystal Tallman, Matthew and Marc Tallman, Devan and Claire Hughes and Alida Breckman as well as great- grandson Ellis Leach.
His memory is his family's greatest blessing.

As stated before, my heartfelt condolences on the loss of your father/grandfather. I felt the need to share of how proud Harvey would be, of this well written book I am reading right now, ‘The Princess Auto Story’. He’s probably telling all above 😊 May he rest in peace and though I didn’t know him, I feel your loss. Respectfully yours, Christel Vedan Calgary North #4 - Posted by: Christel Vedan (Princess Auto Team Member) on: Jul 29, 2024

To the Tallman family, my sincere and heartfelt condolences on your father Harvey's passing. Ben Kushnerv introduced me to Harvey about 20 years ago. He was a most interesting person and interested in everything. I remember many hours sitting in his living room at Winnipeg Beach with Ben, and listening to the history of Princess Auto, Winnipeg, and the history of the Jewish community here. He has left a large hole in the lives of many people. He was one of the most interesting people I have ever known. - Posted by: Frances Milner (nee Barrett) (Friend) on: Mar 15, 2023

From the entire Bochurka family to the entire Tallman family, our sincerest condolences on the passing of your father and grandfather, Harvey. My father, Eddy, and Harvey became friends and business associates back in the early days of both Princess Auto and Eddy's Gravel. Friendships grew and carried over to children and grandchildren. Harvey has been a friend of our family since before I was born. He will be sincerely missed by us all. Rest in peace, Harvey. Your work here is done but your legacy will live on. He was a good man. While my Dad and I were building Sobering Auto Electric we bought a lot of used generators and starters for rebuilding from Harvey. And the story line is true he was tough but always fair and went out of his way to help us. God needed someone to orginize heaven so he called Harvey. - Posted by: don sobering (old customer) on: Mar 04, 2023
