Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • I was very sorry to learn of Al’s passing in todays Passages column in the Free Press. Al and I were both grad students at the University of Manitoba in the mid 1970’s and shared a basement apartment in Fort Garry. Arnold the bachelor home owner was an interesting landlord who had a lab job by day but nightlighted as a gold prospector in the bush on weekends. A standing joke between Al and I whenever we met years later was Arnold’s excited story one day about using his old Ford Mustang as a field vehicle and driving home loaded up with a rock full of cars. Al was a keen student, a hard worker with a long distinguished career and always with a smile on his face and a kind word. He will be missed by his family and many friends. RIP. - Posted by: Rick Wishart (Friend) on: Jun 17, 2023

  • So sorry to hear this. Al and I commuted from Gimli to Winnipeg together for about 5 years, and he was an enjoyable companion and a very reliable driver! Al taught me more about fish biology than I knew existed, and regaled me with stories of his studies and work, especially in the North. He was a great storyteller! One of Al’s favourite lines was “Ain’t Nature elegant?”. Al, the Earth and all her creatures will miss you! My deepest condolences to you, Arlene, and all Al’s family. - Posted by: Ginny Aho (Friend ) on: Mar 12, 2023
