ANNE MUDRY

(nee WITYSHYN)

January 22, 1925 - April 2, 2023

Anne Mudry passed away after living a life filled with sharing, kindness, love, good food, and a crazy amount of knitting. She was fond of saying “we worked like hell”, and that was a discipline she instilled in her sons.

Mom was born on January 22, 1925 at home in Komarno, Manitoba. It took her parents a while to get her birth registered so she always had two birthdays, which forever caused an issue when she was asked “date of birth.” Her father, Paul, emigrated to Canada from Ukraine in 1911 and her mom, Sophie Anniuk, also emigrated from Ukraine in 1901, at the age of five. Anne was fortunate to have been part of a big close family. She moved to Winnipeg when she was 17 and started working at Eatons. There she learned about city life and made many friends. Anne met Nick at a dance at Crabby Steve’s dance hall in November of 1948. They dated for nine months and were married on August 6,1949 at the Parish Church in St. Norbert. They lived in a small house on Red River Drive with Nick’s mom until the 1950 flood destroyed it; they then purchased a house at lot 58 Red River Drive.

Vegetable farming was a huge part of their lives. They continued to be a vital part of the community through 1997 when the “flood of the century” destroyed their home. They had a good life filled with the love of community and hard work. On winter weekends, the house was filled with neighbours and friends playing cards, with lots of food and socializing. In retirement, Anne and Nick traveled with friends, enjoying the adventures of trying new things. In her later years, Mom took to knitting like it was a curse. She would knit from sunrise to sunset. While all the kids, grand kids and cousins had scarfs that they did not know what to do with, we began donating them to charity. Many a friend enjoys using her fabulous dishcloths to this day! Anne lived independently until the age of 94, when deteriorating health necessitated a move into assisted living.

Anne was predeceased by her beloved husband Nick in 2012 and by her sister, May and brother Bill. She is survived by brothers, John (Olga), Steve and Stanley (Ruth); sons, Larry (Cathy) and Ken (Alison); grandchildren, Nick, Katie (Zach), Kara (Brendan), Kim (Nick), Duncan (Lanna) and by Meagan (Paul ). Also surviving Anne are great-grandchildren, Jake, Elsa, Zoe, Kaia, Ellie, Rachel, Morgan, Ayla and Bowen, as well as numerous beloved cousins, nieces and nephews.

We would like to thank the staff at Thorvaldson Care Centre for their support during the past four years.

A family Celebration of Life will take place at a later date this summer.
