TERRANCE ROBERT GUNTER

November 30, 1956 - April 12, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved brother, uncle and friend, Terry.

He was predeceased by his parents, Jack Gunter, Irene and Victor Bell, sisters, Faye Schalk and Dawn Papineau, brothers-in-law Eddie Paluck and Butch Papineau, nephews, Douglas Papineau and David Schalk. He is survived by his brother, Merv Gunter (Lynda), sisters, Linda Paluck and Tricia Geurts (Albert), brother-in-law Alfie Schalk, as well as many nephews and nieces who thought Uncle Terry was a pretty special guy. He will be missed by his good friend Jayde, who visited him often, took him to church, hockey games, Tim Hortons for coffee and just enjoyed spending time with him.

Terry was born with cerebral palsy but never let it get the best of him. After his dad died when Terry was 4, he spent time at St. Amant and then at the Manitoba Development Centre in Portage la Prairie. Due to the persistence of our Mom, he was able to move to Selkirk in 1984 with the Provincial "Coming Home" program, together with three others from this area. It was a successful move and all of them enjoyed a good life with Inclusion Selkirk. In recent years, Inclusion Selkirk was able to bring other people home and Terry was thrilled to see this happening. He was very pleased also with the decision to close MDC.

Terry’s greatest joy was to spend time with his family; celebrating Birthdays, Christmas, Easter and Thanksgiving with us was always important to Terry. He would ask everyone he met if they were going to come to his birthday celebration! He loved parties and celebrated his 40th, 50th and 60th birthdays with more than 100 guests. He knew just what he wanted and loved the planning as much as the parties. He loved travelling and visited Edmonton and area where his sister Dawn and family lived, and enjoyed a trip to Los Angeles with Linda and Tricia to see his favourite show "Ellen" as well as spending time at Universal Studios, Disneyland and touring the Queen Mary. He was always a hockey fan and enjoyed Jets, Moose and Steelers hockey games, and eventually became interested in football to "keep up with the guys". He enjoyed bowling in the Inclusion Selkirk league. He loved music, especially records as a young person and was thrilled when they came back and he could enjoy them again. Terry took a lot of good-natured teasing from his family but always enjoyed being with them. He also enjoyed the friends he lived with and those he worked with at the Day Program, always happy when they had a party!

Terry was a kind, thoughtful person who will be missed, but who will live on in our hearts and memories.

We are grateful to the staff and his friends at Inclusion Selkirk for making his life a good one, as well as our extended family and friends whom he enjoyed visiting. We are thankful for the staff at Steelcity Physio who treated Terry so well during his weekly visits; he really enjoyed his time there and they brightened his days.

We wish to thank his staff, the Paramedics, RCMP and hospital staff who took such good care of him on his last day.

Celebration of Terry’s life will be held on Tuesday, April 18, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. at Gilbart Funeral Home in Selkirk. The service will be livestreamed on the Gilbart Funeral Home website.

Donations in Terry’s memory may be made to the Inclusion Selkirk Building Fund, 377 Eveline Street, Selkirk, MB R1A 1N4.

Condolences may be left on his tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com
