SHIRLEY THOMSON

(nee DRYSDALE)

On April 10, 2023, at the age of 97, Shirley passed away peacefully at Tuxedo Villa Extendicare.

She is the last of her family’s generation, predeceased by her sister Hazel, brothers, Wilf and Bern, and her devoted, loving husband of 42 years, Arnie. She will be greatly missed by her daughter Enid and son-in-law David. Of her many loves, there was none greater than that for her grandchildren, Anna and Steven. She was happiest playing with them or cheering proudly from the stands at games, concerts and plays. They will miss their gramma.

Born and raised in Beausejour, Shirley trained as a nurse at St. Boniface Hospital and spent 30 years truly caring for her patients. While working at the Rehabilitation Hospital she met and married Arnie in 1969. In their home on Jessie Avenue they enjoyed helping their neighbours and hosting card parties. Their Christmas parties were famous for a homemade buffet and signature sherry-laden trifle.

Shirley was a force of nature. She had a flare for design and fashion and a love of antiques. After her nursing career she started a small business selling antiques and collectibles. “The Browse Around” on Lilac Street, and her devoted customers, brought her much joy.

Animal lover, chef, gardener, piano player, strong independent woman. We will miss her energy, enthusiasm and humour. Rest in peace darling.

Much gratitude is extended to Jan Marshall, Janice Lorback, Beryl Drysdale, June Thomson, and the entire Robinson clan. Thank you to Thorvaldson Care Centre, especially Gehdey and Lee. We deeply appreciate the kindness and care Shirley received from the staff at Tuxedo Villa. Special thanks to Kristen H., Magene, Adebola, Merley, Maureen, Bea.

A celebration will be held at a later date, to be announced.

In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to the Humane Society.

Condolences & Memories (2 entries)

  • I'll always remember my Aunt Shirley with fondness and love. As a child growing up in the Wolseley area of Winnipeg my family lived only a couple of blocks from where she and daughter Enid lived. As a result she was a major influence in my early childhood, like a second mom. Her flair for style and design were evident in the clothes she wore and the homes she lived in. In my mind's eye I see her standing with one hand on her hip and the other tapping her cheek pondering the location of a piece of furniture, whether to buy something for the Browse Around, or worrying about someone. She will be always be fondly remembered. - Posted by: Harold Stanley (nephew) on: Apr 22, 2023
