NORMAN ANGUS MACDONALD

After a brief illness, Norman (Norrie) passed on April 19, 2023 aged 82 in hospital.

He is survived by daughters, Fiona and Kirsty, grandson Ray and some extended family in Scotland.

Norrie was predeceased by parents, Effie and Calum Macdonald of the Isle of Lewis, Scotland, his brother Roddy of Ardrishaig Argyll and his beloved Sophie Melnychuk of Winnipeg.

Born in Lochgilphead, Scotland, Dad was educated in Art and education in Edinburgh. He began his teaching career at Oban High School, came to Winnipeg to teach at Churchill High school 1967 to 1969, back to the isle of Tiree with his growing family, and then finally emigrating to Canada in 1972. Norrie was a staple for 28 years at Gordon Bell High School in Winnipeg. He was devoted to making Art fun for his students, many who will remember him fondly for years to come.

Dad enjoyed time spent with the Grand Lodge of Manitoba for many years, loads of evening and weekends at Assiniboia Downs, and Dart League at the Fort Garry Legion where he met his lovely Sophie, with whom he resided and cared for until her passing in 2022.

As per Dad's wishes, there will be no official service. Cremation has taken place.

Thank you so much to the staff at the Grace and St. Boniface Hospitals, Deer Lodge Centre and especially Lions Manor for taking such good care of Norrie.

Now it is time to leave you all

in the spirit of a fun loving Scot -

Here’s to us; who is as good as us?

Condolences & Memories (10 entries)

  • Thank you Mr. MacDonald. I spent 3 years in his classroom, listening to the same Rolling Stones album courtesy of another student in the class and being busy. I don’t recall lessons but discussions regarding shadows and shape, and humour. 🙂 Today I work as an artist. Condolences to his family and friends. - Posted by: Kathleen Black (Former student) on: May 03, 2023

  • Hi, I worked with Norrie for many years. Your family gave us Danny the horse, and we enjoyed having him for many years, when we put him down he couldn't hold any weight even when he was eating mush. We had to put him down at about age 30 he had 1 tooth left. Our sympathy To your family & friends. Kathy Claeys - Posted by: Kathy Claeys (Friend From G.B.) on: Apr 30, 2023

  • Wishing to send my sincerest condolences. Mr. McDonald was my art teacher in the 1970s and 80s. His art class was a sanctuary to all that needed it. I was one of those kids. • Our Sincere Sympathies to Norrie’s family, I had the privilege of sharing many phone conversations, met for coffees and lunches downtown and enjoyed visiting at family gatherings with Norrie and my cousin Sophie. Our last conversation most recently, Norrie was lonely and missed Sophie…although saddened by his passing I know he is happy to be reunited with Sophie. Rest in peace Norrie. • I am one of those students from Gordon Bell who has long appreciated Mr. Macdonald and his art class. It was a sanctuary of creativity in the hubbub of adolescence. Mr. Macdonald believed in me. Not that I had any talent, but he saw my interest and he fostered that. He gave me ( and other such souls) his artroom to explore, and with his knowledgeable guidance, allowed self guided keeners to try everything. He trusted me to come in on my own at lunch, to stay late, to do my own projects rather than follow a class lesson. He gave good instruction but it was his good-natured confidence in me that gave me stands out. I didn't become "an artist" from all this (nor did I feel there was any expectation to) but curiosity and creativity got to thrive and find a solid footing, under his watch. It was a lasting gift that he gave as art teacher of Gordon Bell. Thank you and rest in peace, Mr. Macdonald - Posted by: Ackerman Rain (Art class student) on: Apr 29, 2023
