ERNEST LIONEL MERRICK

In the early hours of April 29, 2023, Ernest Lionel Merrick left the arms of his loving wife of 68 years, Joan, his daughters, Leslie Dowbenko (Larry), Lynn Measner (Adrian), Colleen Thompson (Larry), and Barb Altomare (Nello) to rejoin his parents, Ernie and Nan Merrick. Lionel will be missed by his grandchildren, Laura (Ben), Dave (Amanda), Jared (Amanda), Megan (Landen), Kyle, Dana (Drew), Kira, Aidan, great-grandchildren, Tessa, Dexter, Cara, Julia, sister Bev Krawchuk and in-laws, Pearl Greenaway, Midge Barry (Don), and Bruce Greenaway (Elizabeth), along with many nieces and nephews.

Lionel loved sports, enjoying many and excelling in a few. He played lacrosse in the 1940s and 50s, helping his team to a few championship wins. With his wife and daughters by his side, he was proud to be inducted into the Manitoba Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 2022. When he took up curling, he often participated in bonspiels and once won a car as did his team members. His sons-in-law would have him substitute on their league teams where he’d surprise their opponents with his level of play every time.

When Lionel wasn’t playing sports he was watching them. He especially loved to see his grandchildren playing football, soccer, hockey, gymnastics and dance and tapped along with the music at every band concert.

He was a man of faith and a gentle soul. We see his kindness and love when one of us tells a long story or plays a game with a grandchild or when another takes on family responsibilities without a second thought. He will be sitting beside us watching every hockey game and we will think of him when we hear someone whistling a tune.

As per his wishes, a private family graveside service will be held.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Transcona Memorial United Church or the Alzheimer’s Society of MB.

  • So sorry to hear the passing of Uncle Lionel. We have many happy memories with the Merrick’s as young children. I had my tonsils out in 1966 and was so fearful in the hospital. Uncle Lionel comes in with his wonderful smile and a troll doll to occupy my thoughts. There was such comfort in that visit that it has never left me. My thoughts and love to you all at this sad time. Love Elaine - Posted by: Elaine (Huebert) Emslie (Family friend) on: May 06, 2023
