We are saddened to announce the passing of our father, grandfather, great-grandfather and great-great grandfather, Léo Trudeau, on December 19, 2022, at 96 years of age.
Predeceased by his daughter Rita Lansard; his son Denis; his father Georges; his mother Augustine (née Manaigre); his brothers, Luc, Gédéon, Laurent (Anita Carrière), Emile (Diane Legal) and Alfred; his sisters, Annette Lamoureux (Albert), Agathe Lavallée (Fernand), Suzanne Lagassé (Bernard) and Lilliane Lansard (Isidore). He leaves to mourn his children, Gérard, Annette Demarcke (Hector), Agnès Bonneteau (Gilles), Cyril, Rachel Lansard (Léo-Paul), Léon, Nicole, Alice, Adèle (Jude), Clément (Louise Trémorin), Anita and Dolly; multiple grandchildren; siblings, Rose Odile Trudeau, Marthe Kirouac, Ernestine Kirouac, Guy (Lorraine Gauthier), Almanzor (Louise Gauthier), Antonio (Annette Buisson), Louise (Jules Trudeau) and Monique (Larry Hamm), plus many nephews and nieces.
Léo was born in Ile des Chênes, Manitoba on March 7, 1926, to a large French Canadian family of 18 children, nine boys and nine girls. He learned to survive young, became a good carpenter and learned to provide for his family.
He settled in Giroux and later in Ste. Anne, and had 14 children of his own, five boys and nine girls.
Léo knew and appreciated farm work, such as fencing and building sheds; he built a new garage and a long addition to the barn. He took pride in seeding crops, haying and ensuring that his animals were well-looked after. He kept a very clean farm, even the bush around the farm had to be kept clean, he’d get the children to pick up branches and rocks and stack them in certain areas, then burn the branches and use the rocks in lower spots and holes.
He enjoyed every property he bought, the lakefront in Lac du Bonnet, Marchand West, Otterburne and finally in St-Malo, where he still had his lot, trailer and garage. He took pride in every tree he ever planted on the lot, all 80 plus of them, by hand. When he was in Otterburne, he would sit by the river and shoot the beavers that threatened to cut down his trees.
He spent over 25 winter seasons in Brownsville, Texas; many times with his brother Emile and wife Diane.
People were amazed at how he enjoyed politics, his knowledge was quite extensive, be it federal, provincial or municipal affairs, he kept up with all world events. His knack for politics came natural, discussing personal issues was more difficult for him.
Dad lived a simple life, secluded in his own way, but was a sociable individual when friends and family stopped in or whenever he met new people. He never asked much of himself or of others. Up until the day he died, he drove his car every day, even if it was just to go for coffee at McDonalds with his friends. We are all grateful that he was never hospitalized or placed in a Personal Care Home.
Dad died on December 19, 2022, found on the floor of his apartment, at 96 years of age. Thank you Lord for taking him the way you did, you granted him his wish. Rest in peace, dear Léo…
Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, May 27, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the Ste. Anne Roman Catholic Church, presided by Father Kevin N. Lereh M.Ss.Cc. Following the service, interment will take place at the columbarium in the cemetery behind the church.
