EDWARD JAMES SWIRSKY

Ed, my husband, my friend, my antagonist, and my sweetheart, was born April 7, 1942, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

His education began in a three-room school in Whytewold, Manitoba and graduated in Gimli. He subsequently attended college in Berkley, California and then was employed by Russell Foods equipment for 30 years. Ed then found his true calling at University of Manitoba in the Department of Agriculture where he studied all things concerning plants and trees.

In 1970 he married me, Betty Geurts. Together, we raised four children Jacqueline (Tony Simmons), Dawn (Dan Cyrenne), James (Lisanne Pajot), and Matthew (Kate Haas) and have 8 grandchildren; Keenan, Jamison, Juliet, Claire, Oscar, Elizabeth, Margot, and Penelope.

Shortly after we were married, we started our first business, a chicken takeout restaurant called “B & E Carryouts” now known as Salty’s in Winnipeg Beach. In 1980, his entrepreneurial drive led him to open Lower Fort Garry Garden Centre in St Andrews. Ed was instrumental in the development of the garden centre and was always willing to share his knowledge with his customers. He was a hard worker but still had time for family vacations whether it was camping at Black Lake, skiing at Big Sky Montana or other “Swirsky family vacations” which always inevitably had an epic story or two that resulted in lasting memories no one will forget.

Ed had many health issues throughout his life but always managed to overcome them, but they began getting more intense and his body was getting tired. Ed was faith filled and firmly placed his trust in God. After receiving the Sacrament of the Sick and Dying on the wee hours of June 6 (Thank you Father Gerald for being a light sleeper) surrounded by his family, on the afternoon of June 7, our Lord took him home. You fought the good fight Ed and we are sad and will severely miss you but happy that you are no longer in pain.

Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday, June 14 at 11:00 a.m. in the Notre Dame Church, 269 Jemima St, Selkirk, MB.

Well done good and faithful servant, come and share your master's happiness till we meet again. Love your wife Betty.

Condolences may be left on his tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

  • Betty and family. We are so sorry to hear the news of Ed's passing. I will always remember Ed with that twinkle in his eye and that smile which said he was up to something.
