AGNES BERTHELETTE

(nee FONTAINE)

September 1933 - June 2023

We are extremely saddened to announce the passing of our mother, meme and great-meme, Agnes Berthelette, nee Fontaine on June 6, 2023.

Agnes was predeceased by her parents John Henry Fontaine and Helen (Swampy) Fontaine, her siblings Rose, Maurice, Lizette, Paul, Richard, Leona and Stanford, her daughter Michelle (McPhee), her son-in-law Jim McPhee, and her granddaughter Dr. Stacy McPhee (Dr. Sourabh Maiti).

Agnes leaves to mourn, and continue life without her, her children Jerome (Carmen), Les (Shannon) and Lionel (Tracey), her much loved grandchildren Sean McPhee (Karli Sigurdon), Veronica (Berthelette) Charles and Courtney (Berthelette) Pelletier (Mat Pelletier), her adored great-grandchildren Alice Charles and Greyson Pelletier, along with special nieces Corinne, Brenda and Rhonda, and many other nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law Bert (Sylvio) Berthelette, sisters-in-law Doris Lamoureux, Evelyn Allam, Yvonne Berthelette and Noelline Berthelette. The announcement that a Pelletier great-grandchild is due on her birthday had brought Agnes more joy.

Agnes was a Fort Alexander residential school survivor. She very seldom talked about her experience and memories, preferring to concentrate on the present. However, it was obvious that the scars were there. We as a family, must never forget what was taken from her.

Agnes was of tiny stature but that did not take away from her force. She was a strong-willed and determined woman. How many driving instructors had she fired before getting her licence?

Life was not always easy for Agnes but she loved to laugh and enjoyed being surrounded by family and friends…and nothing could thrill her more than a good win at bingo or the casino.

We will dearly miss you, mom, meme, but we will be fine, you taught us well. May your spirit soar on your spiritual journey.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Revera Charleswood Long Term Care Home for their professional and compassionate care.

A celebration of Agnes’ life will be held Friday, August 4, 2023 at 2:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., Winnipeg, MB. Please join us for refreshments after the ceremony so that we can reminisce and share stories of Agnes.

  • RIP aunt Agnes. I will cherish all the phone calls we had, the trips we took to Sagkneeg when I would pick you up, to attend family funerals, dropping in at the Casino on our way back to the city. We definitely shared good times together that you left to me and the stories you sheared. You can rest now with our loved ones in the spirit world.
