DOUGLAS KENNETH FERGUSON

December 4, 1939 – June 15, 2023

With family by his side, Douglas Kenneth Ferguson passed away peacefully on Thursday, June 15, 2023 in Brandon, Manitoba. Douglas was predeceased by his parents Ella and Ken, and brothers-in-law Jeffery Pope and William Charkos. Douglas is survived by his loving wife Janet, children, Sandra (Peter) Biesheuvel, John, Michael (Elizabeth), and David (Kelly), and his six grandchildren, Ella and Laura Biesheuvel, Nolan and Cameron Ferguson, and Avery and Carter Ferguson. He is also survived by his sister Joan Pope, his sisters-in-law Judy Charkos and Sharon (Will) Neild, brother-in-law Jack (Barb) Riley, stepsister Peggy (Ed) Maier, and several nieces and nephews.

Born in Winnipeg on December 4, 1939, Douglas was raised in Flin Flon, Manitoba. He attended school until grade 11, when he went to work at Revelstoke Lumber. He moved to manage the store in Canora, Saskatchewan, and then moved back to Flin Flon to work in the Hudson’s Bay Mine with his father. In 1964 he moved to Winnipeg to begin his training as an electrician at the Manitoba Institute of Trades (Red River College). While in school, he met Janet Riley. They married in Brandon, Manitoba on June 10, 1967, and moved to Thompson. Douglas worked for Manitoba Hydro for 31 years, beginning his career at Kelsey Generating Station. He went on to work in Gillam, Grand Rapids, and Jenpeg. In 1980, the family left northern Manitoba to settle in Brandon, where Douglas continued working in Jenpeg for 16 more years via a fly-in program before retiring as an Operating Supervisor in 1996.

Douglas was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church in Brandon where he served as an elder for many years. Douglas was also a pilot and until 1976, and he owned his own plane in which he would take his family flying. His love of planes took the family to many air shows in Canada and the United States. Douglas could fix anything, and his hobbies included woodworking, fishing, flying his model airplane, and tinkering with his 1954 Oldsmobile, “Delores”. Summer vacations were spent camping in northern Manitoba and Saskatchewan where Douglas and the kids swam and fished. Douglas loved fresh pickerel, and his rule was that no jackfish were allowed. After his retirement, Douglas and Janet continued to camp, and took their fifth-wheel camper and their dogs on trips to British Columbia, Alaska, and Nova Scotia.

Throughout the last few years of his life, Douglas suffered from Alzheimer’s disease. He spent the last 16 months of his life in care at the Assiniboine Centre and Rideau Park Personal Care Home in Brandon. Even though he lost his ability to communicate with his family, we always saw the spark in his soft brown eyes. Douglas had a great sense of humour and loved a good joke or story. He told many stories about his work, flying his plane, or going fishing. Douglas had a soft spot for animals, especially dogs, and he had several dogs and even a few cats throughout his life. He even had his “grand-doggies” to give his many hugs and kisses to. We know that he is with his pets now and he is enjoying long walks and cuddles with them.

Many thanks go to the staff at Rideau Park Personal Care Home for their kind care and compassion towards Douglas. A private graveside service will take place at Brandon Cemetery at a later date. Flowers are gratefully declined. Donations in memory of Douglas may be made to the Brandon Humane Society, 2200 17th Street East, Brandon, MB R7A 7M6.
