SHIRLEY COLLEEN MICHALUK

(nee JOHNSON)

May 8, 1951 - June 11, 2023

Peacefully, on Sunday, June 11, 2023, at the Arborg and District Health Centre, Shirley Michaluk, aged 72 years, passed away.

Shirley was born in the old Gimli Hospital to Stefan and Inga Johnson (nee Vigfusson).

She leaves to mourn: husband Michael; children, Michelle Denise and Michael Stefan; grandsons, Anton and Alex; mother Inga and brother Gerald Johnson.

Shirley grew up in Gimli and on fish camps. In January 1972, she graduated from the Winnipeg General Hospital as a Registered Nurse. She worked first in Arborg and then in at the Gimli Hospital, which opened on the day of her wedding.

She married Michael Michaluk May 13, 1972. She decided to stay home from nursing to help on the farm, using her nursing skills on the cattle and the family. She was always willing to help family, friends and neighbours. She enjoyed knitting and sewing from the age of eight, and she also learned to crochet and cross stitch often late at night while her family slept. Her allergies to the farm helped her and dad decide on early retirement. They sadly left the farm and moved to a six acre saskatoon farm and began new adventures. She enjoyed helping with the saskatoon farm, especially visiting people while picking.

Shirley was a member of the St. Michael's CWL, Gimli Health Auxiliary, Westshore Community Foundation, Minerva Ladies Aide and the Gimli New Horizons Club. These kept her busy and involved in the community. She suffered a mild stroke and Parkinson's set her back from volunteering and helping others for a few years but with Mike's help they were able to stay in their home and volunteer which kept them busy.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Gimli Community Westshore Foundation, Box 395, Gimli, MB R0C 1B0.

A memorial mass will be held on Wednesday, June 21, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. in the St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, Gimli, MB.

Condolences may be left on her tribute wall at www.gilbartfuneralhome.com

Condolences & Memories (3 entries)

  • On behalf of our WGH 1972 nursing class, I am sending our condolences to Michael and family. I knew Shirley was not well when she had to miss our 50+1 nursing reunion in May. She loved classmate get togethers. Shirley will be missed. Cheryl Chesney, class rep. WGH Class of 72 - Posted by: Cheryl Chesney (Nursing classmate) on: Jun 18, 2023

  • Shirley was a very intelligent, caring person and we are so sorry to lose her. We played together occasionally when we were kids in Gimli but recently we were able to establish a more meaningful relationship as cousins. I will miss her so much especially her determination. She was an amazing woman. May she rest in peace and may her family know that she is finally free of pain and physical restrictions. - Posted by: Louise Bloomfield (cousin) on: Jun 17, 2023
