Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryALAN GRANT DUNCAN
Peacefully at home and surrounded by his family, Alan passed away from Parkinson’s Disease.
Al was born and raised in Virden, MB. He attended Virden schools, and later went on to post-secondary education where he received a B.A. from the University of Manitoba, and Teacher Education from Brandon University.
He started a teaching career in Pilot Mound, MB in 1968. He opted to change vocations in 1974 when he started a long career with the Manitoba Government. He was employed in the Parkland Region for 20 years working in Duck Bay and Swan River. Al relocated to Winnipeg in 1993, where he worked as a Probation Officer with the Department of Justice for 17 years, retiring in 2010.
Al was a bibliophile reflecting his love of books and reading that began in childhood and lasted until his final days. His tastes in literature were eclectic although history and political/social issues were of special interest. Reading for him was a reminder of how scant anyone’s knowledge actually is. The confident assertions of the unread irritated him since he believed that opinions should be grounded in factual reality. He was appalled at the recent ignorant forces attempting to ban certain books from schools.
Al embraced other diversions, specifically his loyalty to his favourite sports teams - the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, the New York Yankees and the Boston Bruins. He also had a lifetime interest in the songs of Bob Dylan. Blessed with an excellent memory, Al also enjoyed crossword puzzles and trivia.
Al was predeceased by his wife and partner of 35 years, Cynthia in 2021. Her sudden and senseless death was emotionally devastating to Al from which he could not recover.
Al is survived by his three daughters, Alana (Mark), Sara (Nathan), Michelle (Greg); his in-laws, Dave and Betty Yerama; sister-in-law Caren Hotchkiss; his two grandsons, Cameron and Rhys; and his long-time faithful companion Buster the cat.
Cremation has taken place; no service will be held. He will be laid to rest beside his beloved Cynthia in Virden Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, a donation to the charity of your choice may be made in Al’s memory.

So long my best buddy and bestman at my wedding! We knew each other since early childhood and I will treasure the millions of memories we made together. From sitting in the front row of the every Saturday movie...you with your all-day sucker and me with my popcorn....to our "old geezers' nostalgia" day trips to Virden to reminisce, prowl our old haunts, check out our parents' grave sites, and meet up with the other buddies with whom you have now joined! Be at peace "Dunc"! You were the best friend and "brother"a fellow could have. I will miss you enormously!! Garry - Posted by: d Dorothy Reid (Childhood Friend ) on: Jun 26, 2023
