DAVID PHILP

February 28, 1957 - June 15, 2023

It is with heavy hearts that we share the tragic passing of our husband, Dad, Papa, son and friend, Dave Philp.
Left to remember him are his loving wife, Beverley; children, Brenna, Nikki (Simon) and Graham (Kristin); grandsons, Mason, Finn and Linden; mother, Elvira; father-in-law, Millard; and many dear friends. Dave was predeceased by his father, Ed; sister, Linda; and mother-in-law, Erika.
Dave was born in Toronto and raised in Winnipeg, graduating from John Taylor Collegiate. Dave grew an early love for sports and played competitive hockey throughout his childhood and teenage years. As an adult, Dave enjoyed weekly basketball games, snowmobiling and was dedicated to his English Billiards league.
At a young age, Dave developed a passion for all things cars. He pumped gas, built his love for drag racing at Drag Mart, Drag City and Supershop, and eventually worked 26 years in automotive accessory sales with Grandwest Enterprises. It was this love of cars, and the social life that came with it, that led Dave to meeting the love of his life, Bev. He would end up selling his racecar to buy an engagement ring for Bev.
Dave and Bev spent 41 years together. Their early days were spent travelling to different drag races. They bought a cottage in Gimli and cottage life quickly took over. Dave’s favourite time at the lake was Sunday evening, when the neighbourhood would grow quiet and the nicest weather would arrive.
Dave was a loving, fair and tough parent. Above all, Dave was a source of constant support to his kids. He supported their schooling, careers, hobbies and passions. His primary focus was in helping them build solid and fulfilling lives. The Philp kids and grandkids were extremely fortunate to have been raised by Dave and will feel his absence greatly.
Hockey continued to play a significant role in Dave’s life. He played rec hockey with his Dukes teammates and devoted years to coaching in St. James. He enjoyed bringing his 1975 Dodge Camper Van to the arena for pre-and-post game tailgates. He took immense pride in watching Graham play and being his private coach from the glass. Dave, when questioned about the seriousness with which he approached hockey, would say that "it was not about the hockey", it was about following rules, discipline, and building lifelong connections.
With the kids grown, Dave and Bev fulfilled their vision of moving to Gimli and building their dream home. Dave found joy in golfing, cutting grass, ice fishing, and tinkering in his shop. Dave and Bev began to travel again, sharing hot vacations with friends, and snowmobile trips to Hecla with their kids and grandkids. Dave and Bev built a beautiful life together - happy children, wonderful friends, shared interests, and most importantly, lots of love.
Dave was a lifelong perfectionist and earned a great deal of pride from the projects he’d complete. From rebuilding cars and sleds to building additions to his cottage or home, Dave’s work was immaculate. He took great care in maintaining his yard and loved to take in the views from his deck.
The Philp family would like to thank our community, neighbours and friends for the outpouring of support over the last few weeks. It has been both overwhelming and humbling. We would also like to thank the Gimli Car Club for your kindness during this difficult time.
Please join us to celebrate Dave’s life at the Ambassador Conference Centre, Canad Inns Garden City (2100 McPhillips Avenue, Winnipeg) on July 7, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. A reception at Tavern United will follow immediately after. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Gimli Minor Hockey in Dave’s honour.
In recent years, Dave lost two dear friends - Greg and Harold - and felt these losses deeply. It is our hope that Dave has reunited with his buddies and that they are cheers-ing a cold OV to all of us who are left to remember them. We love you.

  • Truly shocked and sorry to hear of Dave’s passing. We were childhood friends, (til I moved away in grade 11), and both our Dads were in the Air Force band together and we both lived on Parkhill St. He had great puck control, hard to get it off him on the backyard rink. One of my fondest memories was riding in his ‘57 Chevy. My condolences to all his relatives. - Posted by: Rick Wheeler (Childhood friend) on: Jul 09, 2023

  • Bev, think of you often Heartfelt condolences to you and your family Gail Iwan - Posted by: Gail Iwan (Friend) on: Jul 07, 2023

  • It is hard to find the words. I have known Dave since junior high school. The best way to sum up my relationship with Dave is a lifetime of adventures and tradition. Like so many others I have been fortunate enough to have shared the life long tradition of Wednesday night. Much of that tradition was pre and post game sessions in Dave's garage. Dave was the one who got me more seriously into golf. Another tradition and adventure I have shared with Dave is our yearly trip to Oakville, Ontario to visit our dear friend and host Brad. For almost 25 years Dave and I have competed against Brad and his golf partner in a competition for the coveted East/West Challenge trophy. It will not be the same without you brother. Dave was good with all things mechanical. He was always there to help out his friends and family with his time, tools and talent. Dave has taught me a lot and was a shining example of honesty, integrity and doing things the right way. Like so many of you who knew Dave there is a big hole in my life. Love and condolences to Bev, Brenna, Nikki, Graham and the rest of the family. To all Dave's friends, I feel for you. I miss you man. - Posted by: Wayne and Franca Horsman (Friend) on: Jul 06, 2023

  • It is still difficult to believe the sudden passing of our dear friend Dave. My friendship with Dave spanned for over 50 years since meeting him on the hockey rink at age 8. Dave was a gifted hockey player, helping our team to win a city championship. Our Wednesday night gatherings started in 1977 with many of our High school friends playing Basketball at Ness Jr. High spawning the original WNBA (Wednesday Night Basketball Association). Gathering after at our local watering hole was a tradition for decades. Dave's garage was also a gathering place for so many of his friends. I'm sure many Jet's trades were hatched there as well as discussions on what to do with his cars, boats and the hot tub. Sending my deepest condolences to Bev and his family. Dave will be sadly missed by all of his many friends. Rob Lelieveld (Lifelong Friend) and Luann - Posted by: Rob Lelieveld (Friend) on: Jul 05, 2023

  • Whenever I was around the Philps at Barteaux family gatherings I was always so in awe of how close and happy you were as a family. I’d always noticed how Dave looked like he was quietly bursting with pride. Knowing you were all together in Gimli was such a happy thought and now my heart is so sad for you all. Hoping all the love you have for each other will carry you through this unbelievably unfair tragedy. I’m sure he is still so full of pride for his family. - Posted by: Peggy (Rob’s old girlfriend ) on: Jul 05, 2023

  • Dave and I have been friends since I was in grade 10 and Dave in grade 12 at John Taylor. Him and Smitty welcomed me into their group through our love of sports. What a couple of beauties those 2 were. Later on our kids went to school together at the same High School. Wednesday nights at Dave's garage after playing basketball at Ness was a huge part of our lifes. He always ended the night with his famous "1 quick one"? He taught me how to hold the golf correctly not like I was doing it. He showed me how to leave the cue ball in a difficult spot for the next guy in Billiards, how to look for a good date on a case of OV and everything I know about muscle cars and drag racing was taught to me by Dave. No one had a cleaner car than Dave. Condolences to Bev and the entire Philp family. R.I.P. Dave - Posted by: Todd and June Miclash (Freind) on: Jul 04, 2023

We were friends to David’s mom and dad in Winnipeg when David was a young boy and later in Victoria. - Posted by: Guy and Jeannette LeBlanc (Friends of David’s mom and dad) on: Jul 03, 2023

  • I met Dave 20 years ago, as we were both in the automotive business. We became friends quickly and he'd always find time for a 5 o'clock pop at my shop. When I moved to Matlock he showed me what the Interlake really had to offer and it made the transition a lot of fun!! Really am going to miss ya Dave, RIP. - Posted by: David conlin (customer/friend) on: Jul 01, 2023

  • I was saddened to hear of Dave's tragic passing, I knew him from his Canadian Supershop days and playing billiards at #4 Legion - My condolences to his family - RIP Dave - Posted by: Gary (friend) on: Jun 29, 2023

  • I was extremely sad to read the email last week from Grandwest that my rep and friend Dave had passed away. Although I did not see Dave very often we talked quite a bit on the phone and occasionally snuck out for some sort of lunch buffet and a few laughs. Always happy and always funny. He was one of my favorite suppliers reps because he was always fun to joke around with and he was a very straight up honest salesman. Over the past decade or so we have had some really good conversations that started off work related and turned into something more interesting. He represented Grandwest very well and was one of the main reasons we dealt with that company. I will miss his laugh and occasional emails. Very nice man that I am proud to have known. I will miss his visits. Glenn @ Jeep Doctor - Posted by: glenn (friend) on: Jun 27, 2023

  • So sorry and shocked to hear this news. Dave was one of our best parts representatives. Always cheerful and eager to help whenever we had a challenge. We are going to miss the voice of Grandwest within Dave 😢. Condolences sent to the whole family. - Posted by: Len Boschman (Business Friend) on: Jun 27, 2023

  • Offering our condolences for your loss. I have known Dave for 20 plus years through our love of English Billiards and the WVEBL. I even had the pleasure of playing with Dave out of Charleswood Legion for a few years. He was a good teacher, and we shared a few drinks and food over the years. He will be missed. Until we meet again on the billiard table - Posted by: Jon & Kerry Miller (Freinds) on: Jun 26, 2023
