It is with immense sadness in our hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved mother Assunta. Loving wife to our Dad Emilio (predeceased), and a grandmother and great-grandmother.
Assunta was born in Torano, Castello, Italy on August 15, 1928 to her parents Venera and Camillo.
She enjoyed many good times with her six brothers and one sister, helping to raise them and going out to cultivate the land. It was several years later she would meet and marry the love of her life, Emilio. They soon started a family of their own which brought them eight children. She immigrated to Canada in 1969, with kids in tow. She soon joined her husband, who had arrived the year prior. Assunta soon set down roots in Winnipeg.
She lovingly raised her children and created a wonderful happy home full of love and laughter. Their house was soon a meeting place for the extended family and many friends. There were stories to tell which often involved a little homemade wine from The Cantina. It was a simpler time with people dancing, singing and everyone enjoying life. Assunta always made sure you were fed. Her food was always homemade, fresh and plentiful and of course the best.
Her true love was her family but a very close second was her garden. Every year, she looked forward to summer and tending to it was her true passion, spending hours upon hours each and every day until the sun set.
She always put everyone else before herself. Checking in on her family daily to make sure everyone and everything was alright. She was small but had a large personality. Assunta spoke her mind when it needed to be done expressing her view and was always on point. Coming to her house you knew you would find her in her garden, under her grape trellis enjoying a coffee, or in her kitchen cooking one of her many dishes. Her love of making bread and fresh pasta was only surpassed by her eagerness to make her famous biscotti for all the grandchildren.
She had a heart of gold and gave to many charities throughout her life. When asked why she gave so much away she said, I have enough to eat so why shouldn't others be able to eat. You always were welcomed with a large smile, hug and a traditional Italian double kiss whether you visited her or she visited you.
She also looked forward to her weekly seniors’ group at the Cabot Center, and keeping in touch with her many friends.
Assunta will be missed by all that knew her. We will always cherish the memories that we had with her.
She is survived by her children, Rosamaria, Sandra (Mario), Gio, Orazio, Sonia (Ray) and Michael (Michelle); her six grandchildren, Mina (Giulio), Vito (Monica), Alder (Cathy), Alyssa, Riley, and Julianna; seven great-grandchildren, Alexia, Teya, Gia, Paolo, Sophia, Adriano and Alessio and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is predeceased by her husband Emilio, her son Giuseppe and daughter Giuliana.
The family would like to thank the 5th floor at the Health Science Centre for their compassionate care.
