ANN NIXON HOOGSTRATEN

March 26, 1956 -June 25, 2023

Peacefully, with dear ones by her side, our beloved Ann Hoogstraten passed away on June 25, 2023, after a long illness.

Ann defies description, but those who knew her will remember a loving wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, cousin and friend. She had a special connection with all of her beloved animals. Only squirrels were not tolerated.

Ann was brilliant. She had an international reputation as a bird photographer and a vast knowledge of computer technology, mechanics and pretty much anything else that caught her interest. In her job as the “Gimli Gardener”, Ann was a wonderful ambassador for the town, and her exuberant hanging baskets showed the joy she took in her work.

She was without a doubt the most impressive lawn cutter that has ever tackled the Big Lawn at Stephenson Point, where she mowed with style and a great tan.

Above all, Ann loved her family, her pets and her home on Lake Winnipeg.
She leaves behind her beloved Jim Cook, their late son Dylan’s wife Mika and grandchildren, Aki and Jun, Ann’s brother Taylor (Laurie) as well as the much-loved nieces, nephew and cousins and friends who share so many memories of Ann and life at Stephenson Point.

The family is especially grateful to Deb Romeyn, Ann’s lifelong friend, whose unconditional love and helpfulness never wavered.

Thanks also to the staff at the Gimli Medical Centre for their compassion and care.

We will miss her dearly.

Condolences & Memories (5 entries)

  • This is how I met Ann - at the 10 o'clock morning rush to the post office. which was a bottle neck when people stopped to catch up with the weather predictions and news. Then I had the privilege to visit the Stevenson Point property and get to know the many talents that Ann was practicing. I offer my heartfelt sympathy to the Hookstraten and the Cook families. Her legacy is treasured by family and myself. The historic cottage always inspires me to re enact in my mind the long gone days. She inspired me, and I firmly call this home. RIP ANN your presence on Stephenson Point forever. - Posted by: Helma Rogge Rehders ( at the Wpg Beach post office conversations) on: Jul 10, 2023

  • I will miss her. She called me “Grasshopper”….when she was teaching me all thing’s “techie” related. She was the epitome of a one of a kind. Everything she did…she did with gusto. As for squirrels…she told me she only shot the “one’s with ugly ear’s”. Condolences to all the family and friend’s who will miss her greatly. Take care all of you. - Posted by: Nancy McIntyre (Friend ) on: Jun 30, 2023
