CAROL JEANETTE FERGUSON

Carol Jeanette Ferguson (Munroe/Barany) was born November 3, 1938, in Kenora, Ontario and peacefully passed away on June 25, 2023, in Winnipeg, Manitoba.
She is survived by two beloved daughters, Carolyn McLean (Rick) and Susan Munroe who gifted her with five cherished granddaughters, MacKenzie Loewen (Braden Dick), Madison Loewen (Adam Krieger), Bennett Murphy-Mills (Brentt), Chapin Murphy and Schaeffer Murphy. Additionally, Carol is survived by three dear bonus grandchildren, Rachel McLean (Carl Fitzgerald), Matti Richardson and Rebecca McLean. She truly adored her darling step-granddaughter Sophie Fitzgerald. Carol is also survived by many cousins living across the country from Vancouver Island to Prince Edward Island. Destiny, Carol’s dear friend and helper for many years had been a godsend. As well she was thankful for her lifelong friends or “angels” who had been there through thick and thin.

Following graduation from Grade 13 in Kenora, Carol attended the Manitoba Teachers’ College in Winnipeg and then taught public school, private piano and took great pleasure in volunteering as an English teacher to immigrants mainly from the Middle East. After relocating for five years to Alberta she returned to Manitoba for the rest of her days. Aside from becoming a teacher in St. James, Carol worked as an office administrator at St. Andrews United Church, the Convention Centre and several psychologist offices.

The Arts were an integral part of her life. Carol studied both piano and singing at an advanced level. She sang in countless choirs, participated in local music festivals, prepared for yearly RCM exams and enjoyed performing in several lead musical theatre roles. She faithfully volunteered for the Manitoba Opera Company and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. Carol simply adored animals of all breeds (except snakes). In particular she deeply loved her comfort cat CoCo as well as the many other cats, dogs and horses that were part of the family. Many of the pets would come to gatherings and with a laugh she would secretly feed them under the table. Carol joyfully experienced countless adventures while travelling around this big wide world including North America, Mexico and Europe. Exploring Scotland with her mother was a highlight and a dream come true. She left a part of her heart on the Isle of Mull and the Sacred Isle of Iona where the MacLean Cross is located.

It is with love, affection and a deep sense of loss that Carol will be greatly missed by her family and friends. She held a huge place in our hearts. May she rest in peace.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Tuesday, July 4 from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. at Neil Bardal Funeral Centre, 3030 Notre Dame Avenue. Heartfelt thanks are extended to the staff at Simkin Centre and Deer Lodge 4 West for their extraordinary kindness to Carol.

In lieu of flowers, it is preferred that donations be made to D’Arcy’s Animal Rescue Centre or to Mental Health Awareness.

  • Carol and I became friends while working for many years at St. Andrew's River Heights United Church. When work took us different paths, we continued our friendship and in later years, especially during COVID times, we could telephone chat for an hour at a time on a weekly basis. Needless to say, I will miss her very much and my sympathy goes to her family for their loss. - Posted by: Iris McKay (friend and work colleague) on: Jul 01, 2023
