MERLE FRANCES CHALMERS

(NOSWORTHY)

May 9, 1939 – July 6, 2023

It is with sadness that we announce the passing of Merle Chalmers, a cherished wife, loving mother, doting grand and great-grandmother, exceptional hostess, and skilled cook. When Merle passed, she left behind a legacy of humour, love and delicious memories.

Merle will be greatly missed by her three daughters, Kathryn, Liz, Mary (Graham Zakaluk), granddaughters, Christine and Paige (Andrew Rawson) and great-granddaughter Quinn Rawson. Also saddened by Merle’s passing are her nieces, nephews and friends, both lifelong and new.

Merle was predeceased by her husband Bill, parents, Ernest and Vera Nosworthy and sister Lois Mallon.

Merle exemplified the virtues of grace, kindness, selflessness and fun throughout her life. She dedicated herself to the happiness and well-being of her family, embracing the roles of wife, mother, and grandmother with unwavering love and devotion.

Merle had a natural sense of humour, a twinkle in her eye and contagious laugh that brightened the lives of those around her. Merle’s warm heart and love for both children and dogs were evident to all who crossed her path. Her grandchildren, and most recently her great-granddaughter, Quinn, held a special place in her heart, and she showered them with affection, support, and cherished memories.

Merle's talent as a hostess was truly remarkable. Whether it was a small gathering or a grand celebration, she had an innate ability to create an atmosphere of merriment and hospitality. The Chalmers’ home and their cottage on Willow Island were havens where friends and family gathered to share laughter, stories, and memorable meals. Merle's skill in the kitchen was unparalleled, and her culinary creations delighted the taste buds of everyone fortunate enough to sample them. Her recipes will continue to be cherished and enjoyed by her loved ones.

As a dedicated mother, Merle played an integral role in our family's journey. Bill's job took us from Winnipeg to Toronto to Miami, Florida, then to New York, and finally back to Winnipeg and Merle skillfully held the family together, providing a sense of stability, love and fun. She faced the challenges of moving with grace and created a welcoming home wherever we went.

Merle possessed a remarkable ability to form deep and lasting friendships. She collected friends like treasures, remaining close to her childhood companions as well as to friends gathered upon the way, throughout her life. These enduring friendships were a testament to her genuine care, loyalty, and ability to connect with others.

Our family extends our heartfelt gratitude to the staff at the Portsmouth who made Merle feel at home from the moment she arrived soon after Bill’s passing. Additionally, we express eternal appreciation to Cherry Aguilar and her team of loving caregivers, who provided exceptional care, love and compassion to Merle during her final years.

A memorial service to celebrate Merle's life will be held at Thomson Funeral Home, 669 Broadway, Monday July 17, 2023 at 10:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made to the Winnipeg Humane Society or to a charity of your choice.
