Marie Sedor passed away on June 23, 2023 at the Saint Boniface General Hospital.
She was predeceased by her parents, Michael and Anne Szport; brother John; and beloved husband John Sedor.
She is survived by her sister-in-law Imelda; niece Marie and her children, Marissa and Nate; and her nephew John.
Marie was born in Moose Bay, Manitoba and received her education in Moose Bay, Geraldton, Rorketon, Snow Lake, Manitoba Provincial Normal School, and the University of Manitoba. As a teen, her family moved to Snow Lake. There, while attending High School, she worked at The Bay. She always spoke fondly of the people and Community Club which provided all kinds of opportunities for learning new things: Highland dancing, performing in floorshows at dances, learning to swim and dive, all manner of organized sports and community events. She became secretary of the Goldtown Teeners’ Club and sang in the Junior Choir.
She went on to teach in various Manitoba schools, and worked as principal, resource teacher, and Special Education Coordinator, retiring as Assistant Superintendent in 1996.
Marie was a feminist since childhood, always questioning the constraints placed on females.
Her interests were many: her students, the arts, writing plays and non-fiction, painting, reading (especially biographies), kitchen science (inventing new recipes), cats, nature, humour, exploring new venues, playing ball and badminton, swimming, and trying to figure out human behavior.
In 1982, she won the MTS Newsletter Award. She was happy to see her play “Lemon Pie” presented by the Golden Stagers at the 25th Community Theatre Festival hosted by Dauphin in 2003.
Marie and John were married in 1962 in Rorketon and enjoyed working in the RM of Lawrence, Fork River, Glenella, Gillam, and Prince George. At one point they ran a service station while John continued to play in his band at all kinds of social functions. Marie even played guitar in his band for a few years.
They were do-it-yourselfers from the get go. Marie designed a house and they built it. Upon retirement, they created a cozy place in Dauphin where they won first place for best-kept mobile home grounds in 2000.
In Dauphin, they planted big gardens and donated to the Food Bank. Marie was a member of the Dauphin Library Board, Dauphin Writer’s Guild, and Retired Teachers’ Association.
In 2003, John’s ill health compelled them to move to Winnipeg to be closer to specialists and they settled in friendly Sts. Peter and Paul Manor. She delivered newspapers to the residents and together with John and friend Cecile created monthly lunches for residents for several years.
Marie especially valued the many kindnesses extended by the residents and staff of Sts. Peter and
Paul Manor, as well as her long friendships with Imelda, Jennie, Hilda, and Rita.
Her family wishes to express their gratitude to all medical personnel that cared for her with their kind and efficient support, and send love from Marie to Hilda, cousin Helen, Karen, and Georgia.
She touched many lives, and will be missed greatly by all who had the pleasure of knowing her.
Marie lived by a simple philosophy: “You can’t do everything, but you can do something".
As per Marie’s request, there will be no formal church service and her cremated remains will be placed with her husband’s at Glen Lawn Cemetery, 455 Lagimodiere Blvd.
