DIANE BARLISHEN

1943 - 2023

Diane Barlishen (Gottfried), grand lady and family matriarch, passed away peacefully holding the hands of her family on July 4, 2023. She was predeceased by her loving husband, Frank Barlishen, on May 2, 2021.

Diane was born in Victoria, BC on May 14, 1943. She spent much of her youth in Gimli, Manitoba, and had a lifelong career in teaching, most notably at the Rehabilitation Hospital, Isaac Newton School, and Southeast Collegiate. Frank and Diane, his ‘sweetheart,’ were married for 57 years and raised four children. Diane was the sage to whom family, friends and students went whenever there was a need for advice, and invariably the solutions she offered were the right ones. Diane and Frank were so supportive of each other, and their main interest and love was for family. Diane loved her role as grandmother and never gave up an opportunity to praise and to care for her grandchildren. Memorable too were the many family birthday parties at the house and cottage with 20 entrees, sides, and desserts lovingly prepared.

She taught her children and grandchildren to “leave the world a little bit better than how you found it” and lived her own life as an example of this. No one who came to Frank and Diane's door was turned away, and help, advice, a meal, and a bed were always offered to those in need.

She will be greatly missed by her children, Kim (Mark), Chris (Wendy), Cam (Melanie) and Craig (Danielle), grandchildren, Kevin (Laura), Kira (Antoine), Claire, Carter (Denise), Colten, Zoey, Abby, Anders and Everly, great-grandchild Lily, niece Karen (Christophe) and grandnephews, Calvin and Simon, and brothers, Jack (Gloria), Ronald, Kurt (Barb) and families. Other special people include JoAnne, Bernice, Colin and Gwen, Paul, Steve and family, and her lunch ladies. She joins her husband, Frank, at the kitchen table with parents, John and Fjola, sisters, Brenda and Susan, and brother-in-law Bob.

Grateful thanks to the kind and dedicated health care teams on 7A South, St. Boniface Hospital.

The family will be having a private service in Gimli.

Condolences may be shared through www.neilbardalfuneralhome.com and donations may be made to Rossbrook House or Jocelyn House Hospice.

  • Dear Diane; This is Lien from Sydney Australia. We talked often on the phone, Diane told me everything happening to her children, grandchildren and her close friends. Diane knew me in my darker hours of my life. You always received me with advice, foods and human philosophy. Diane knew me more than I know myself. she often told me things about myself that I don't even know. She encouraged me every step of the way from when I was first a migrant to Winnipeg 1982 when I meet Kim at the university of Manitoba through to June 2023. I told her I am going on a very long trip to Europe, and we will talk when I am back. I tried to contact Diane on the next day I arrived home 12 and 13/09/23 but there is only an answering machine. I was worried trying to get the answer or find try to contact her children. When I searched for Barlishen I saw Diane Barlishen, I can hold back my tears, I think this is a mistake? Then I saw her picture No that is not possible; I am going to tell Diane my travelling story, but you are not here to listen to my story. Diane, who is there to know me, to understand me, to finish the sentences for me and to tell me who I really am. I just can't believe, I told you, I will visit you next summer 2024. You told me "you better come to see me". Now this has become an empty dream ---- where do I go from here. You, Frank and children are a very important part of my life journey. Diane told me as a friend, a mother, a daughter, a wife, and a human being you deserve to do everything you want from now on. Diane thank you once again to give me courage and believe in me to move forward. May you happy to be with Frank, you both belong to each other, LOVE LLIIEENN with all my heart. I know you me to be happy and move on but I am going to be sad for a very long time; - Posted by: Lien Tat (A very close friend) on: Sep 12, 2023
